    Queensland Trainers

    G'day all,

I'm getting a pup soon (from a breeder on this board - I'll let her post if she wants to :P) and was after some advice on trainers.

The trainer recommended to me (Craig) has not returned my emails or messages left on his answering phone so I am looking at other potential trainers as I can't find any other patrol/protection trainers via google.

I'm on the Sunshine Coast but willing to travel a 1-2hours each way to get to a decent trainer, do I have any other options?

    Cheers,
    Michael.

ETA: I am not sure if this is in the correct section.

    Hi Michael

I'm sure more experienced people will reply too.

While doing the NDTF scent detection course I met Gary Jackson, who also does protection work. He seemed knowledgeable and was great fun to watch work! Very energetic guy, I ended up buying the video of his part of the course as I couldn't take it all in the first time!

He also has a link off the NDTF site

Now I know nothing about Queensland so don't know if he is even remotely near you

That guy is pretty close, just over an hour away which I think is closer than Craig (but he doesn't list a location on his site so I am not entirely sure).

Probably worth sending him an email

I'm doing the scent detection elective as well so I might even end up meeting him there, but scent detection is probably in the second block?

    Thanks.

    Re: Queensland Trainers

I did scent detection as a separate course to the trainer cert course in 2003, went for a week. The trainer cert course has changed a lot since I went through in 2000 so I don't know if he is in that section.

Ahhhk, yeah, I don't think we spend a week? We might though, only paid an extra $200 for it so if it goes for a week then I'd be surprised.

    Re: Queensland Trainers

i know this is a bit off topic, but with the NDTF elective i've chosen to do the tracking and man-trailing one, is this different the scent detection one that you've done/doing??
not that NDTF have mentioned anything about it to me yet, as it is not run through the distant learning course, hopefully im still on the list.
i've also put my name down for the security dog handler and behaviourist specialist cousres, i cant wait to do the sec dog handler one!! i was going to do it through red gum kennels (proactive security) in Queensland (townsville and brisy) as they run a sec dog training and handling course where as a part of it they/you also train your dog.
So that one might be a good one for you Midol, let me know if you need any info on it as i have been sent out some stuff from them.
    good luck with everything.
    Cheers, Jess

    Re: Queensland Trainers

Yes tracking is different to scent detection

Tracking is following the scent of a person, along the ground where they walked. Not too sure about the difference to trailing, I think trailing they use air scenting too?

Scent detection is where the dog is taught to find a particular scent (eg drugs or explosives or food items) and indicate the find to the handler. It is used in AQIS, police etc.

Just to confuse you lol scent discrimination is an exercise in obedience trials where your dog has to pick the article the handler touched out of other articles either touched by nobody or the judge. Again this is human scent as opposed to scent discrimination.

    Re: Queensland Trainers

Ahhh ok thanks, i was hoping i could do both, but i chose the tracking over scent detection cause i'd love to get into it.
that and i'd like to Sch in the future and having that knowledge will hopefully help me with the tracking part of it.
thanks again, now im off to find out what the difference between trailing and tracking is, considering im going to be studying it, it might help to know what exactly it is that im am studying.
    Cheers, Jess
