    What makes a good trainer?

Ok I’ll start this off by saying at first I would have said ‘Results’ and left it at that. However, after giving it a bit more thought I came to the conclusion that results (or I should say good results) may not necessarily make a good trainer. Well trained dogs can and have been the product of dubious methods in training i.e. table training (as was mentioned elsewhere), and several of the old yank and crank methods. Both have produced well trained dogs, but as training has evolved from my early days when one of the later was used, I’d have to say that IMHO communicating with and reading your dog, experience, being good at problem solving, knowledge gained from others, and yes learning from your own mistakes make up 90% of what it takes to be a good trainer........the other 10% could possibly be down to good material to start with, and/or luck.

Hopefully I've put this thread in the right place?

I'd be interested in members views on this topic.

There have certainly been good trainers around over the many years that methods existed that may not be kosher today, so l would not limit it to a method making a good trainer. l think understanding how a dog ticks and being able to communicate what is required of the dog efficiently and with as little confrontation as possible is a sign of a good trainer. Trainers who seem to have a natural rapport with their charges , who do not rely on paraphernalia , and develop the whole dog are the ones that impress me.
l would add, one good dog, does not a trainer make.

i think it comes down to how the trainer reads the dog and is willingness to try different things to get the results
as well as i think they need good people skill as well because its not all ways the dog with the problem

you know interesting topic. good trainers... yes and i think also people who are qualified to read a dog too.

i find with mine for example one of my girls i had a friend come down from nsw for a visit and he assessed her and brought the devil out of her so to speak where in the 12 months i have been training with her the few training places she's been to she's only playing compared to how he did it. i think it just depends on how the person is able to read the dog and also how the dog responds on the day.. i know sometimes my dogs want to play and sometimes have a real bite to hurt??? maybe it's the training i dunno?
