Owner faces jail over Sydney dog attack | News.com.au
A DOG that attacked two children in Sydney's west has been seized by council rangers and could be destroyed.
Its owner could also be jailed if the dog is found to be a dangerous breed.
The 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were walking along Tanderagee St in Constitution Hill about 5.10pm (AEST) yesterday when the dog escaped from a nearby property.
It ran at the children and bit the boy twice on his left arm, police said.
The girl kicked out at the dog but it grabbed hold of the boy on the right side of his chest before letting go.
A neighbour came out and restrained the dog before returning it to its yard.
Paramedics were called and the injured boy was taken to Westmead Childrens Hospital, where he was treated for bite wounds to his left arm, his left leg and the right side of his chest.
The local council has seized the dog, which has been unofficially identified as a rottweiler. Checks were being carried out to confirm its breed and whether it is deemed a dangerous dog.
Under the Companion Animals Regulation 1999, a restricted or dangerous dog which attacks or bites a person because it is not properly controlled can be destroyed immediately.
The owner could face a penalty of up to two years' imprisonment and a fine of up to $55.000.
Police say their investigations are continuing.
A spokeswoman for Westmead Childrens Hospital said the boy was in a stable condition this morning.

Well jail time would put owning a liablity without responsability into perspective.

It would but we both know it wont happen.More media sensationalism. When you read it says owner could be jailed if it is found to be a dangerous (restricted) breed. Its a rottweiler so no its not.A simple google search would have told the author that but it wouldnt have sounded as dramatic.
When will people learn to contain their dogs.It is the main criteria in responsibly owning any animal.May sure it is adequately contained on your own property and that it cant stray.Pretty simple I would of thought. Now they will call for rottweillers to be banned and why.Because some idiot couldnt keep his dog on his own property.

Yes already the polls are starting up again" should Rotts be banned" nobody learns even contained dogs bite sometimes, people should man up face they own an animal with a set of teeth and control it ALL the time, lock it up, take a pee with it next to you if you cannot supervise it for a second! Do not let dogs out of sight! Do not trust others to come feed them if you want to holiday etc...
I have five kids and ZERO incidence i have no help with my dogs, if I can do it safely wtf is wrong with all these lazy assed dog owners!

I think it will be easier if they just banned ALL dogs..especially ones with 42 teeth and canines...
Then we can ban cars...damn look at how many people each year are injured and killed by them wild beasts... Or at least find out which model is injuring and killing the most first, ban them. Then ban all cars if the injuries don't stop.
Then we need to move on and ban smoking altogether.
Then we need to ban bike riding
Then we need to ban flying in ANY aircraft.
Then we need to ban swimming at the beach
Then we need to ban forums..who knows how many people are killed each year trying to read posts on their mobile phones while driving cars that should be banned!
Hmmm.. ban mobile phones!

LOL.. I agree.. there are sinister things lurking in the darkness of Adelaide .... Just yesterday, read this:
Man bitten on arm as rottweiler attacks his dog at Taperoo | Adelaide Now
Are they blaming the Pit or Rotty here?A MAN has been bitten repeatedly when a rottweiler attacked his pit bull terrier at Taperoo this morning.
The unleashed rottweiler dog approached the man, 34, while he was walking his pit bull at a park on Echunga St about 11.45am.
The dogs began to fight and one or both of the dogs bit the man's arm several times as he attempted to pull them apart, a police spokesman said.
SA Ambulance officers took the man to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a stable condition for further treatment.
The stray dog ran off and its location is unknown, police said.
Port Adelaide and Enfield Council has been notified of the attack and police are investigating.
The attack follows the death of Ayen Chol, 4, who was mauled to death by a neighbour's pit bull mastiff dog in her Melbourne home last month.
Her death sparked calls for stricter national controls on dangerous dogs, which differ across the states.
Federal Justice Minister Brendan O'Connor said last week he would raise the issue of national dangerous dog laws with his state counterparts.
