Dog baiting scare: police - ABC Online

The Charters Towers Stock Squad is worried someone is baiting dogs in the north Queensland community.

Three dogs died within four days in the same rural part of Charters Towers recently.

Detective Sergeant Mark Hogenelst says wild dog baiting programs have not started and he is concerned the dogs could have been poisoned deliberately.

"Three suspicious deaths can certainly be attributed to that area.

"Two of the dogs belong to the people that I'm concerned with and then the third dog, we don't know who owns that, but it's died under the same suspicious circumstances as well in the same area.

"So that is a concern, it's a total of three."

He says he is waiting for test results to confirm the animals were poisoned

"What concerns me more is people that have a callous disregard for animal life," he said.

"I'm concerned for the fact that these baits may be thrown out in other localities where children may be able to pick them up and eat them.

"That's the main thing I'm worried about. At this point in time, there's nothing indicating that, thank goodness.

"But it's just something that's always at the back of your mind. More so the reason to find out who's done this and make sure it doesn't happen again."

I read about a similar case last year, where someone was baiting lots of dogs around ashgrove etc in the suburbs of Brisbane..
