Knifing police dog lands teen in jail

A Balgownie teenager who fatally stabbed police dog Carts while fleeing a crime scene was sentenced to 18 months' jail yesterday.

Handing down the sentence on 18-year-old Nemanja Vukadinovic, Wollongong magistrate Sharon Holdsworth said the killing of Carts generated considerable anguish and pain inside the police service and the community.

She refuted claims that Vukadinovic acted in self defence, saying the 6cm-bladed pocketknife used to stab Carts in the neck and back was wielded with significant force to cause wounds up to 15cm deep.

"This was a very serious offence, the consequences of which was substantial harm and loss," the magistrate said.

She noted that it must have been traumatic for Carts' handler, Senior Constable Brett Williams, who had not returned to work since the stabbing on December 9, last year (see separate story).

In the early hours that day, Vukadinovic and a friend were intoxicated. Just before 3am they broke into Corrimal Surf Life Saving Club and stole a quad bike which they used for a 20-minute joyride on Towradgi Beach.

When challenged by Snr Const Williams, the friend stopped but Vukadinovic ran into bushland. When calls to stop were ignored, Carts was released.

Carts caught up with the offender after a short pursuit and bit him on the leg, as taught in bite and detain training. It was then that Vukadinovic pulled the knife from his pocket and stabbed the police dog.

Magistrate Holdsworth said the teenager had an extensive criminal history as a juvenile. "These offences took place just two days after a Children's Court had imposed a good behaviour bond," she said.

She ordered Vukadinovic to serve a minimum 13 months in jail. He will be eligible for release on parole on October 24, 2009.
Vukadinovic was also placed on a two-year good behaviour bond and fined $150 for a number of unrelated offences on December 27 last year, while on bail after Cart's killing.

Sad loss for the handler. Unfortunately police dogs are at the sharp end; that’s their job. The handler, although no doubt devastated by this will no doubt carry on with a new dog once they’ve completed the course, whilst still keeping his memories of a good and much loved partner.

PS Just to add that in the UK the offender would have probably received far less. As pathetic as it is, UK “powers that be” treat police dogs as just another piece of equipment.......sad but true I’m afraid.

Not only he should be jailed for longer but he should be deported, simple as that.
As for a Police dog , he has done his duty .... that is what they do and it's in any hand better that it was the dog rather then an officer getting killed.
