Thanks for putting the clip up - would be interesting to see how most dogs would react in that situation.

I have no idea what my dogs would do if some one came in here when no one is home - but going from their general behavour I doubt any one would even try.

I would like to put them to this type of test though just to see what they would do. Piper is guarding of our property and will make her presence known where as Pink will make a noise but she is not a threat that at this stage. She is still a baby and will be interesting if she is more protective when she matures.

    Interesting topic...

On one hand, people use dogs as deterrent/man stopper,on the other hand many are not aware of that potential liability. It's well and good to feel safe and have your property safe but if a Intruder complained about a bite..... well.. owner can be up for a lot of trouble and expense in court.

Happens with yard dogs, private residences, all the time.

Would anything I own be a worthy guard dog? Hmm ..I would never tell!

    Great topic Nath!!

My old Rott I know for a fact would NOT let anyone in the yard or house. It was put to the test on several occasions, didnt matter what you did, be friendly or threaten him, the outcome was the same, you got nailed!!

Gun is interesting at this stage, being a young dog. I had a situation a couple of weeks ago where the guy came in his tractor to do the fire breaks and Gun didnt know he was there cos we were down the end of the driveway, which is about 200m long. We walked in the gate and this guy walked round the corner. All I can say is I think its bloody lucky I had hold of him. Who knows what he would have done if I let him go tho

The Amstaffs that I have at the moment would invite you in

My hubby is an IT consultant, he often does private work at clients homes and he has seen some very uninviting little fluffies and has had to ask the owners to get the dog out of the room - that is while the owners are there. God know what those type of dogs would do if no one was home - then again those type of dogs might hide if no one was there protecting it.

When I was a kid we had a Dobermann - she was professionally trained before we got her and she would greet visitors with a lovely smile....she was all front.

Very good point Lisa, what exactly would those fluffies be like when the owners weren't around to protect them.

Would have been interesting to see what would have happened , if the police man was not in the room to back his dog .
All the pets were home alone, where as the police dog had his handler in the mock house , with him .
In my experience of running through houses, not many dogs pass the test , alot of owners are quite shocked , that their big dangerous manstopper , actually looks for somewhere to hide.

Yeh and that's where it will probably end, as an argument, The majority of people in that thread argued that there dogs will protect them but they would not prove it by attending an independent dog trainer at my expense to test there dogs in appropriate scenarios. out of the 4 people who contacted me (atleast) 3 months ago saying they would get there dogs tested only 1 has made a booking with a trainer.

It is easy to talk the talk....
