Dog Trainers for Security and Protection - Help!

I have been looking around in Victoria or Southern NSW for a trainer who specialises in Security and Protection.

I have a Shepherd now and hopefully will have a Dobe soon and want to have them both trained for security and protection of my property, myself and family.

Has anyone got any reccomendations or suggestions who to speak to or what I should be looking for?

Would be great to hear from you guys about this.

    Cheers, Danny

Re: Dog Trainers for Security and Protection - Help!

    Hi Danny and Others,

I have a Dobe right now, and, a little like Danny would like to have him trained for protection. I do not know the difference between working bloodlines or not in Dobes, but I do have a little fella who I think (and I may be DEAD wrong) may be just right for this type of training...

So... is there anyone in Victoria that I could have assess my boy for suitability (or not) that I can contact. Someone who could talk me through his personality as assessed and even make suggestions as he seems to "need" to "work". At this stage he is minimally obedience trained, so he is almost "raw".

I'm having trouble getting my head around the legislation and rule changes, so I am in no hurry. By the end of this year, I should have gained my Security License and completed NDTF'S Cert III with a view to Cert IV... I'm hoping to turn a passionate interest into a career change....

    Thanks in Advance,

    Jo

Re: Dog Trainers for Security and Protection - Help!

    Hi Guys,

About two years ago I was in the exact same boat as you!!! Only being new and not sure who to turn to for help. I wanted my dogs trained but knew I needed to get the right person and I was hoping my dog was up to it.

Well, I checked out a few people and the best advice I can give is learn as much yourself, ask lots of questions and if you meet a trainer who says they will train any dog for protection work........well leave them and keep looking, as if your dog is not up to it they should tell you as pushing them if they are not up to it, can ruin your dog and/or make it a time bomb.

Due to the laws in Victoria, most trainers do not advertize or promote themselves and will usually check you out if you approach them. NSW is a bit diiferent as the laws are much more friendly there. You just need to keep looking and ring around to find someone local.

I have sent dogs away and also now train with a local decoy who is very good. It took me along time to find the local guys but we now train every week and it is great to see how the dogs have progressed. The dogs I sent away for training came back pretty good but the work we have done ourselves has certainly reinforced to the dog what is what. Sending them away certainly gave them the background basics but the regular work has taught me and the dogs so much. I look forward to training day to coming around everyweek......so do the dogs. K9 Prosports may be an option for you to look at and meet people. Also in hinsight, with sending them away you are placing a lot of trust in the people for them to do the right thing by your dog, if you are there you get to understand what is what and if you dont like what they are doing you can always say stop.

So in short dont be surprised if not everyone in here posts about them being able to help you, hopefully they might at least PM you with a contact for training. If you can find someone good and local it will be great to run with them. Make sure you get your dog assessed first as this will let you know if they are upto it and also what direction to go for training. In Victoria doing the Security ticket is a very good idea and you dont have to keep looking over your shoulder!!

Dont know if I was much help but hopefully you find the right person as a really well trained dog is awsome!!!

    Steve

    Ps.....how old are your dogs?

    Thanks Steve, very helpful!

The Dobe is 10 months, and I'm in no rush. I'd just be happy to make some contacts so that when I am in a position to start, I have people who a) trust me and b) can steer me right. I was hoping that the NDTF course would put me in contact with some folks, but have had to suspend study (temporarily due to bushfires and job)... so maybe that remains an option!
