    Starting Tracking

I would like to try tracking with Diesel. I have done a very little bit of footstep tracking with food with him and so far he loves it! Much more than he enjoys obedience!

Any ideas on where to go, books to read, etc? I have Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hilliard.

I will try contacting the Schutzhund club soon to see what they recommend.

So far we have done scent pads and short tracks with food in most footsteps (progressed from in all footsteps). But we haven't done it for a while. Did a short one this morning and he was keen! Should I go back to scent pads or progress from there? Also I'm trying to find a place to go - any recommendations on what sort of thing to look for?

I have focus issues with him in obedience, I'm hoping that maybe since he seems to enjoy tracking that he will focus well on this and we can trial.

    Re: Starting Tracking

I've just started doing traking with kaiser too.
i've been using Leerburgs methods, form his DVD traning a competition tracking dog.
its been working pretty well for kaiser so far, it only took him 20 mins to figure out what the word find means.
im sorry but thats all the help i can offer you, im only new to the tracking scene.
    Good luck!!
    Jess

How's the tracking going, Kavik and Kalexe? I've just started with my 5 month old mally girl, she's loving it so far (she's like a little food hoover).

I did a little bit of tracking with my last dog using the run away method (let him see someone walk away and drop the toy, then encourage him to track after them to find it). The scentpad/food in footsteps method seems to be working much faster, although I'm not sure if that's because it's a better method, or because my new girl is just a naturally more talented tracker! A bit of both, I suspect.

i didnt end up continuing with it.
The grass all dried up, and the conditions wernt great for teaching, and i had to try and teach him in a short space of time and rushed it to much. i might try him again one day, but am in no hurry.

i hope its all going well with your new girl
