But i have no idea what happened to them or if they where for real.

They were just husky x GSD's...

They tend to get a few of them thru public donation

Back in the 80's when I was a RAAF Doggy, we also had a Dingo x, named Rusty. What a mean little bugger he was! I can't remember the handler that had him..Maybe Tony or any other x-Doggies can remember him.

This thread kind of just stopped, I've been looking into wolfdogs for ages, I called the number for Timbershepherds Ltd but no ones ever picked up, has anyone heard back from them, are they actually legit. Also Brad what did the 2 you worked with look like, where they in Aus, and do you have any pics. Can I have the contact details for Dennis, I want to see the Shepherd wolf mixes

    Hi Simon,
Sarloos Wolfhond. An FCI recognized Dutch breed developed from a cross between the European wolf and the GSD, supposedly to produce a superior shepherd dog. It has become highly inbred, has a pronounced flight response to stress (embedded in its Standard!), problems with shyness and poor nerves, and is completely unsuitable as a working dog. It can be light wolf grey, light cinammon sable and pure white.

Interestingly, the wolf breeds have become quite popular in Europe, where the wild wolf is essentially extinct. They seem to have a romantic appeal to Europeans who value their novelty and ties with a vanished wilderness. In North America, which still has extensive wilderness and healthy wild wolf populations, wolfdog crosses are frowned upon.

    Cheers,
    Owen Baxter

    Hi Steve,

American Timber Wolf Shepherd. An non-registerable American cross between the North American wolf and GSD. While certainly impressive, its very large size makes it unsuitable as a service dog. It has no record as a reliable working dog in any field of service or sport. It seems to come in a wide range of wolf and GSD colours, and most seem to show a high set rear and sway back, which are not typical of the wolf. The percentages of wolf blood have not been standardized, and temperament can be unstable. Suffice to say, the wolf belongs in the wild, and there can be no good reason for crossing them with dogs of any breed.

    Cheers,
    Owen Baxter

Apologies if the following offends anyone, but misinformation and incorrect 'opinion' and the 'authority' on with which it is offered just irks me.

    On with the rant!

All respect for your opinion Owen, but excessive size is not a breed trait, mayhaps you just saw a large one?

I have seen some huge german shepherds too!

And whilst I understand YOU have seen no record of them being used as working dogs, I have however, and I rate them very highly. (I know of several in active service in the prisons and security fields etc.)

Dogs are essentially domesticated wild animals, and the North American timber wolf is no different - except there has been far less 'well intentioned' interference from humans.

ALL of the timber shepherds I have seen and worked with, have no 'unstable temperament', but instead have been reliable, level mannered and trustworthy.

I have absolutely no fear that my dog would protect me if the need arose, and absolutely no fear that I could call it off - at any stage.

Your ignorance and attempt at 'authority' on the subject matter offends me.

If you had any physical interaction with the Timber Shepherd, you would not make such preposterous claims and allusions that they are anything but the finest of working dogs.

This is my opinion, based on my actual experiences with the timber shepherd, not my opinion based upon looking on from afar.

    Sincerely,
    Rick
