1/2 yrold and 4yr old intact males available

Not sure where to post this but

there are 3 really good looking straight backed GSD males available at the the Blacktown and Hawksbury Pounds in Sydney

Impounding Number : 07159 - german shepherd X : Blacktown City Council Animal Holding Facility

Animal Holding Facility - Pets Online

    3 GSDs here
    Hawkesbury Animal Shelter

    Hawkesbury Animal Shelter

    one here
    Renbury Farm Shelter

I am going to adopt a male once I'm in 3rd yr to start training as well (as thats only when I'd be stable enough to handle 2 dogs). I was wondering/hoping if people on this forum had space/could consider a couple of these guys for work, and if people here had any stories of good working dogs that they had adopted?

I have not heard of anyone using dogs from the pounds other then the EDD's but they are ball driven and are not for protection work.

I would be interesting to see peoples take on this...

That's unusual for the pounds to sell entire dogs???. I tried to help a friend get a bicolour GSD out of the pound without desexing once, he had nice drives for a personal protection/pet dog and they wouldn't budge on it, not even a vasectomy. Some advertise working line GSD's that pop up occassionally as a GSD X not matching the traditional tan and black saddle I guess???.

A pound dog could have some drive, perhaps drive is what landed them in there and could be worth a look???.

    Cheers

Yeah that was what I was wondering, if they allow you to take the dog without desexing, but they should allow for a vasectomy. I was wondering if the police take dogs from pounds, as SA police were on the news last year asking for public to donate their GSD's to be tested for police work. Surely if the police or police officer wanted the dog the pound would give it entire. Theres a female at Save a Shepherd with high drive and what her profile reads as a great sport dog.
Hasn't anyone here used a rescue dog for work?

The Blacktown pound DOES sell entire dogs, they DONT have to be desexed, I found that out its similar to all pounds in NSW and I think across the country. With that in mind couldn't the GSDs, Rotties and Malinois that end up in pounds be tested for security/patrol/sport work as many surrenders are from 'pet' homes whose dog doesn't fit the sit by the couch whilst watching TV ideal, so most of these dogs would have quite high drives

    1) Minimum tender prices are as follows (current for 2010/11) -

$62 for dogs 6 months' of age and over
$60 for entire dogs less than 6 months' of age
$40 for desexed dogs less than 6 months' of age

    2) Lifetime registration costs are $40 for a desexed dog ($15 if on a pension), or $150 for an entire dog

    3) Microchipping cost is $27

If a dog is already registered and chipped then only the tender fee applies.

There is a free desexing clinic but it can only accept 10 dogs a week (and a maximum of three large dogs) - if a dog requires desexing and there is no room in the program, the Pound will hold the dog until the following week only - IF there is space available. If a dog goes to the desexing program, an $8 vaccination fee applies.

To lodge a tender, you need to fill out a form available at the pound (if you are unable to get to the pound, they will fax a copy through and will accept a completed faxed reply). The completed tender form is then placed in the appropriate day box that the dog is due e.g Monday, Tuesday etc (pound staff will advise which day). On the day the dog is due, pound staff open the box and sort the tenders. The highest bid is the successful tender and the tenderer is contacted - generally speaking if you haven't heard by 10.30am that morning, you have not been successful.

Any surrenders, or dogs that have passed their due date and received no tenders, can be purchased for the above minimum tender prices, plus registration and chip costs (if applicable).

Rescue groups with a clause 16d are able to obtain dogs from the Pound at no cost, once the dogs have reached their due date, and if they have received no tenders. "

The WA Police use rescue dogs:

"Our dogs come from all walks of life. One of our current serving dogs we rescued from a local pound when our training officers saw his potential and saved him from being destroyed."
