Re: New puppy guidelines for dummies

For people that are new to these working breeds, the best suggestion I can make is during the 8 to 16 week period, seek out PROFESSIONAL advice on how to raise your pup correctly! Learn about your pup, understand its drives and psychology. Learn how to imprint correct behaviour, set rules bounderies and limits.. I cannot stress enough how important it is to ensure you set the right early foundations.

A typical example is the Malinois I discussed in an another thread.. These owners waited until trouble had already presented itself. If they had have seeked professional advice during this crucial period of the pups life, many of these issues like insecurity and aggressive behaviour most probably would not have developed.

When I say professional.. I do not mean these delta trained people or the totally positive crowd. Stay away from your general run of the mill puppy preschools. Seek out a professional that understands these types of dogs, and has had experience, and extensive knowledge in the training and raising of these working breeds. Due to the advances in breeding and genetic selection, these dogs are becoming harder, stronger and more driven than ever before. They are not your average pet dog.

We can sit here and write pages and pages on the things you should be doing. That is all well and good. But how many times have I been to a home, seen 5 or 6 puppy training books sitting on the table, and the owners still really not understanding what they are doing.

    That is my NO1 recommendation!

I'm jumping the gun a little but as of our next litter all puppy buyers will be given a free puppy program voucher to visit with a qualified person and learn the basics - it will give them 3 free sessions (that Seeuferhause Rottweilers pays for) to help with socialising, puppy upbringing, playing with their pups etc, no rocket science, just the basics which will then hopefully see them realise how important training is and give them an avenue to continue.

Unfortunately from geographic position I can only do this for Melbourne unless there are suitably qualified people interstate that would like to partner with me on this - if yes, send me a PM and we can discuss and make arrangements.

First of all do your homework well in advance of buying. Find out as much info as you can about breeders their lines the consitancy of litters health issues.Does the temperament suit my lifestyle. Do the breeders actually do more with their dogs than just breed them and watch out for salesman dont believe all your being told remember good dogs will sell themselves. All that glitters often isnt gold.

Great advice from everyone so far. I think Mark hit it on the head with his post.

We are about to start a puppy school up here in Brisbane so if any breeders on this site are keen to recommend puppy school run by experienced working dog trainers rather then Delta trained "how much product can I sell" vet nurses then of course we are happy to help.

    Cheers

Re: New puppy guidelines for dummies

Rather than everyone linking and advertising their business through a thread, I have created two new categories.

Under links I have created a new group for puppy schools and OB for businesses, to advertise through this is free.

Under Canine Businesses I have also created the same group. I have even been gracious enough to finally allow New Zealand to join Australia as a separate state. Notice I resisted writing a sheep joke.

My clients now must do obedience with their pup, or they do not get one .
I have had a few come back because they became to much.

Re: New puppy guidelines for dummies

My puppies are only sold to working homes with a thorough instuctional puppy pack and free puppy kindy. I have always offered 12 months of free development to each pup generally being once per month for the 12 months. This helps me to ensure my working lines are maintained and trained correctly and also to help assess future breeding prospects within my program as I am able to use any of my males for stud.
