Vollhard TT for puppies.

Hi Guys. I thought this might have a place in here.It is the Volhard puppy temperament test. I have not personally used this down to each section, however have borrowed from it.

Have a read, feel free to comment.

Thank you for that, I have been on sites which don't explain it as good. This one is easy to understand. Wondering if breeders of the pups can do it or does it have to be a stranger, do you know?
I would like to try it when I have puppies. I am also intrested in doing Early Neurological Stimulation. I know they show 5 different things but know there is more, not sure what they are. Thank you for sharing this with us. Ena

Hey Ena
In answer to your question....the Volhard test should be done by a person not already known to the puppies: so as to get a complete picture and for the test to be accurate.
By the breeder doing to test: the puppies get a certain amount of comfort even though they are in a strange new area.
Ultimately they should be in an unfamiliar area as well as be tested by an unfamiliar tester: so that you can observe how they react and recover when faced with these variables.
This is then supposed to equate with how they might react if outside of their own comfort zone later in life....ie to measure their inherent ability to cope with stress either in a training situation or trial etc.
I agree with some of the test but not necessarily ALL of the test....I will post an additional supplement which explains some of these reasons and that also rounds out to be a better test.
It's important to treat the Volhard: or any test as an insight but not as LAW....it's one situation....on one day!
The breeder however get to see their puppies throughout the day and in a variety of circumstances....ie which puppy follows them away the furtherest away from their own comfort zone and their littermates.
Which puppy barks as soon as a stranger appears.....which puppy recovers the quickest should you drop their food dish next to them all....and especially prey drive: there are many natural situations we can observe and see which puppy holds the won article aloft and won't allow the others to win it back!
Many of these things won't come out in the Volhard test.......in particular pack drive and competitive situations for the prey etc.
I believe that the breeder has the best idea of suitability etc....so I see the Volhard as simply a tool to help give a part....but certainly not the whole of the picture!

I said that I would add the links re the other tests I prefer to use in addition to the Volhard test…….I believe that together it will give a more rounded insight re puppy selection in addition to what you will have already observed as the breeder: (or what your breeder can tell you re their own litter).
For instance you need to look at the entire litter as a whole when you approach them…….establishing confidence etc…….(see Leerburg’s website: for selection testing.

http://leerburg.com/pickpup.htm

Or see Jess’s thread where it’s explained very clearly.

http://www.specialistcanines.com/selecting-testing/79-puppy-temperament-testing.html

I also REALLY like the principles explained within the following American Bulldog test……..re watching the litter again on approach & discounting those pups from the test that are shy on arrival and who are indifferent to humans and hang back etc.....see also re throwing in the article and watching the litter as a whole prior to testing individually etc!

http://www.american-bulldog.com/temperament_testing_puppies.htm

Take all info and apply commonsense…..not one test does it all.
After all a puppy could be off colour the day of the test so he might turn up a bad result!
Again I believe your breeder knows best!

Early Neurological Stimulation -Developing High Achievers

This has an article on ENS for you eatz.

At the end of the day everything is genetics and environment. What happens today, may not happen tomorrow. Puppies can present all the right signs only to end up average pets and some puppies..... well they grow into exceptional dogs, don't they!

As already mentioned take on board the Information and always use what is right for you as the Breeder/Purchaser or Helper in the process of selection of puppies.Mix it up,leave some out or add something whatever you do,make it simple and do not get frazzled with all the theories out there.

Thank you siegertal
Thank you Amy,
I do have a bitch that is worth the breeding, wish we had sch tainning up here in the country, she would top her class. I train her obedience and this year we start agility but she will never be a champion, she doesn't have the speed which is needed. It helps me to keep her interested, she seems to like agility but hate obedence because it is to slow for her.
In the next couple of month I plan on breeding her and I want to do what my dog didn't get at the early age. When I got her I did a lot or education and have managed to get through most of it and am working with others to fix what I need others with.
So any information will be greatly appricated.
Thank you so much for taking the time. Ena
