    Keeping Termites

    Hi

This seems like a strange question but I was wondering if anyone here does termite detection and if so how do you keep your termites? I have given up trying to keep them as they either die or disappear, so I need to go out and find some before I do a training session which is a real pain and hindering my progress.
I have done a search on the net and can't find any psuedo scent either.
I did want to set up a "junk pile" on the block next door but OH wasn't too pleased about that idea, for some strange reason

    cheers

Geting the corect target odour is 90% of the solution. If someone did know I think they perhaps will keep it to them selves.

Mary-Jane There is no need to use the termite as the target odour... Use the timber the termites have lived in.. Most house frames are made of pine.. so use pine that termites have eaten their way through..... Much easier than keeping termites

you then use pine that termites have not been in.. as your non-target odour. .and termite eaten pine as your target odour...

Vendo- yes I can understand that and fair enough.
Mark- thank very much for your suggestion. I have done that a couple of times but was concerned the dog wouldn't be getting the entire scent picture as I don't want the dog alerting on termite free damage i.e. checking that the pest controller had been successful or that some more haven't moved in later on.

    Ahhh..yes.

Another thought.... sound record termites in timber with sensitive recording equipment Use the dogs excellent hearing.. Not sure if it would work..but see no reason why it wouldn't.

Other than that.. I guess no other choice than to somehow keep termites alive. Not sure how to do that safely... unless you put pine out in the country somewhere..and make reglur trips to get them for training..... Or find a source that can supply you

What a good idea! Pair that with the termite residue scent...... hhmmm now I just need to talk to my nephew to work out how to record the sound without background noise

Ok I don't know what species you are after for detecting but is it the same as the ones found out in the bush? How about you go raid a big mound????

When I was working at Sydney Wildlife World there were some entomologist there that were keeping termites successfully. Try contacting them for the husbandry for them.

    cheers

Thanks Jonathon, not sure what species, but I appreciate the info on somewhere to gain insights on how to successfully keep termites.
