Did i do the right thing?

Hey guys, i havent posted here in such a long time.

Well, on the tuesday 9th of august i put my beloved boy rocky to sleep.

I got rocky 4 years ago... He was my first ever rottweiler. He was a surrended dog that bypassed the behavior test and went straight to me. He was 2 at this time.
I still remember having a thread here when i first got him on advice and tips.

He was a real hard dog, super dominant, took me 3 weeks to bring him home, heaps of muzzle attacks on myself, hated been touched, food aggressive, urinated on me, constantly challenged me to breaking point. But i stuck with it and learned from him, I definatley got thrown into the deep end.

Rocky was always a very slender dog.. He wasnt a huge rotty by any standard. Over the years rocky now and again would get diarhea and vomiting. But it would always leave him coming and going. It was hard for me at the time to take him to the vet, muzzled they still wanted to view him with aesthetic this was $120 without even speaking to a vet to begin with... He always managed to pull through and have a solid shit again. So it really didnt pass my mind. He was a REAL fast eater. He was just food crazy. You know typical food crazy dogs but rocky was insane . eating everything in sight gulping constantly , could never slow him down.

The year went by and I kept seeing rocky getting thinner and thinner, I didnt think much of it. It was a slow process but he was just so active, he was still playing, still bouncing off the walls protecting me at pubs and clubs.

Last month I took him too see a friend of mine, involved in k9 security training, breeding etc.
She told me how horribly thin he was and to beef up his eating plan...
I took him home, I now bought pedigree business, mince, wholemeal pasta , eggs. He was eating like a king. 3 Times a day even having 3 scoops of thrive D.... Still not even full nor fat.... But weirdly enough... Diarhea straight after eating... He should of been getting fat as mud but no...

I went on holidays for 2 days left him in his pen and asked my mother to feed him with his tray underneath the cage. same plan , had the works. biscuits and dog food , thrive d eggs and bread and weetbix.. My mother managed to see him do a solid poo , straight after he would then eat it. I came back home and observed him rang the vet and she advised to go buy pedigree dog biscuits and feed him that with some thrive D. He ate it . I removed his water from his cage , put him back in his pen, and sterilized his collar, and his water bucket in boiling water... I retook him out of the cage 2 hrs later and i noticed he had chronic diarhea, and went straight to the water , I would think at least drinking 4 Litres of it... Im not sure if it was not having water after his biscuits or becoming more ill... Then he had some more diarhea and was vomiting constantly he just didnt seem himself... Obviously now he was dehydrated and needed more water, so i refilled some more for him, he had a few gulps and vomited that...

I then debated whether I should pay the money $600 for his drip , his $350 x rays, then aenthetsetic and late night vet consultation fee of $180... Maybe then i would of found out that he might have had cancer? it seemed like a slow process that was getting worse over the years.. or maybe he just had diabetes? or a pancreas problem? I would never know. I debated long and hard but I decided to lay him to rest. He was loosing weight and not putting any on.. This week has been a terrible week. I owe him my life, He had got me some out of some very sticky situations at work....

    RIP ROCKY!

    Brad

Hi Brad and sorry for your loss. It sounds as if you had a difficult dog on your hands. . . .
Although I am no vet, it sounds like your boy may have had EPI which is Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. It means that the pancreas aren't producing the enzymes to help absorb the nutrients from the food and so the dog slowly starves (even though it has a huge appetite). Given his history, it is a surprise that he made it this far. Had he been temperament tested he would never have made it full stop. All in all, you probably did the best thing for him.

    Sorry for your loss Brad

Sounds like there was an underlying health problem as well as the difficult behaviour. RIP Rocky.

    Hi Brad,

I feel your pain, but in the circumstances you describe I think you did the right thing by the dog for sure.

    Cheers

Sorry Brad but if you had taken him to the vet in the first instance, you would probably still have your dog.
Saved your arse a few times, then he is worth his weight in gold.
You were worried about a dirty rotten $120, when he had saved you how many times, you should have been prepared to die for him, like he was for you.
When a working dog has earnt his keep, there is no expense.
Even if it had have been pancreatic, could have fixed it no worries ,just means he could no longer have any fatty foods.
Poor Rocky sufffered for over a year, for what.
I don't understand, how people say they love their dogs yet they will not take them to the vet when they are ill.

    RIP ROCKY

    Bit rough Rob.

Sorry for your loss Brad. But Brad, Rob in his own way did pick up on one point here. At one stage in the past you were concerned about his health, enough to take him to the vet. Was it just the expense that stopped you from investigating this further?

Hindsight is 20/20 and you say he was active enough but I imagine you would still be concerned.

    Hi Brad,

I had the impression that money was a factor in your decision the way your post was written and understand that we are not always in the financial position to cater for unexpected expense, in saying that, euthanasia over the dog suffering without adequate vetianary attention were the circumstances that I perceived was the right thing to do. If money wasn't the problem, you should have taken him to the bloody vet, I agree with Rob on that stance.

    Cheers

Brad, to say this went on for 12 months is unbelievable, weighing in at 35kg, is even worse.
That is at the very least, at least 13kg underweight, that is a hell of a lot of weight loss for a dog and certainly very noticable.
If this was going on for that long, my view is, you should have got him to a vet much sooner, and Rocky may still have been with us today.
A dog with cancer untreated will not last 12 months.
There are not very many adult male rotties around under 48kg.
I agree at the end it was the best thing for the dog for you to put him out of his misery.
But it should not have got to that , and should not have gone on for that long.
You say he kept bouncing back and it kept coming back, surely that was enough for you to know, something was not right, and you should have got him to a vet, early on.
Look we have all made bad judgement calls, I hope you have learnt from this.
