Hi All
Below is a link to Zoya doing Heelwork to Music. This fabulous dog has been clicker trained from 8 weeks of age, she is now 4. It shows that without a doubt the high drive dog is very succesfully trained by this method.
Not many people can claim to have a dog who can perform such a variety of complex manouvers so accurately
She is also able to do scent work as well as bite work

Thanks Adam
What I love about Operant Conditioning is the joy that the dog shows when working. You cannot achieve this with the 'crash and bash' method

Hi Karen,
Nice work and enjoyable to watch. Bear in mind, operant conditioning works well to teach a dog to do something especially with a dog that has good genetic focus. Where the clicker trainers fail in those methods is teaching a dog not to do something with a dog that lacks genetic focus where a bit of crash and bash doesn't go astray with some temperaments.
Cheers

Ummm.... explain to me how only clicker training is operant conditioning? Arn't all forms and methods of training based on operant and classical conditioning? Operant conditioning doesn't need to be a positive..it can also be a negative.... Karen's use of the term crash and bash, is what I expect from the Delta crowd to try and put other methods down.. I hope you are not part of this crowd Karen, and have a more open and balanced view on dog training.![]()

I have a very balanced view of training having tried my hand at most of the methods in the last 16 years. However clicker training comes up tops and i have not yet met a dog that does not respond. Focus and attention are tought via the clicker, you don't need a 'genetically' talented dog for it. Yes operant conditioning can be used as a negative that is NO REWARD for incorrect behavior AFTER the dog clearly understands the exercise.
I'm not here to knock other peoples methods but to show you what an experienced clicker trainer like myself can achieve
I could not teach these behaviors successfully with a check chain
Personally I train all required tasks the clcker way with my own dogs and teach many people HOW to use the clicker properly. That is the key
Happy Training

Nice work Karen!
What is the difference between Heelwork to Music and Freestyle?
I love clicker training! I do think that high drive dogs are easier to train with it and give a better performance when trained with it than dogs with less drive (though I guess you could say high drive dogs will give a better performance no matter what method you use). My high drive dogs give a nice snappy performance when training with the clicker, my lower drive dog is more frustrating as he is not as good at offering behaviours and works slower.

Thanks Karen ..and yes totally agree with you about clicker or any drive based training. Focus is the important issue here.. once you have mastered good focus then almost anything is possible. However I am also of the opnion that in many instances (not suggesting yours), that most of this training is norhing more than party tricks. Get the dog in the home environment with lot of distractions, visitors, other dogs, etc, or in unfamiliar high distraction areas, many of these methods fall apart. To me there is a big difference to training a dog for sport and tricks, etc, and general all round behaviour. Dogs just like humans need to understand there are always consequences to its actions. If all people could sart their pups at a young age as you have, be consistent, not reward or reinforce assertive or anxious behaviour as the pup is slowly maturing, then life on this planet for all dog owners would be an absolute pleasure.
I also agree, nice heeling work.
