Do you mean do they have to look at you? I am pretty sure that there is no requirement for them to look at you, the only requirement is that they are in the correct heel position.
Is visual focus a requirement?

Yeah, focusing on your face in the heel.
For some reason I hate my dogs doing it. It's creepy.
No its not a requirement.
Dog in the heel poistion also cant be touching you.
What if you accidentally kick them? I find heel really hard :S
Easy to teach, the dog walks by my side but when I do a left turn I walk into the dog. Every time.
That is where rear end awareness comes in handy. What type of finish are you teaching? Even if you don't decide to do the miliary finish, it is useful for left turns as it teaches them how to shift their backside. You need to teach them the left turn separately, not just expect them to know what to do when you turn left.
You can also shape it (I have been doing some of this with Diesel - he will now come over and shift around on the left until in heel position).
Here is Diesel's finish, video was taken a while ago

That's very different to NZKC heeling - the dog here is expected to touch you at all times. And although the dog technically doesn't "have" to look up at you as you heel, I've never seen a dog win a class if it wasn't watching like that (and you have to win your class to qualify, there's no such thing as earning a leg here).
You guys are lucky, the style used in your ANKC obedience seems much more practical than the style required by our competitions. I'd be much more interested in doing obedience here if it was more like ANKC obedience.
Are you doing obedience comps now, Midol? Let us know how you go.![]()
Kavik, I don't have a finish :P I think I might need to start attending the obedience club in caboolture, apparently it's okay. Or go and watch a few trials to get an idea, few DVDs, books.
Staranais, nup, I've never been interested in the one style fits all type of obedience till now. For example, I HATE automatic sits and find the requirement (it is a requirement isn't it Kavik?) moronic so I've never wanted to do it but for some reason I feel like the challenge nowPlus I want to at least get some basic obedience titles on my Husky as I am sick of people calling them untrainable :P
Yep auto sits are required in a trial. Very easy to teach, for once anticipation works on your behalf!
There are two types of finishes from front position, one where the dog goes around your to get to heel position, the other like in my video where the dog flips or swings around.
Here are some videos which highlight rear end awareness for left turns and left about turns
