    Which e collar?

Okay, so this is my first thread/post. I don't want to start a slanging match on the pros and cons of e collars. I've read and seen enough so far to have made the decision to obtain one and don't intend to justify my decision here.

I have a 2 y/o german shepherd male who hasn't had the socialisation he should have and is now dog aggressive. He couldn't be considered a hard dog by any stretch of the imagination but when he locks onto a dog, short of lifting him by the collar and giving him a swift kick, I've bugger all chance of controlling him. He becomes very deaf! This sort of action does not look good during 'walkies'! I have some experience with electronic devices used to control people and I'd much rather use someing similar than a pinch collar at this time (I am open to a change in opinion if the e collar doesn't work though).

So what I'm after is brand/model recommendations.

Also suppliers overseas that export to Australia. I'd love to support a local business but to be honest I can't justify paying double the price to offer that support. Which suppliers from o/s can be recommended?

I don't intend to use this device alone and will be seeking assistance. I will also probably be using it later on, if the need arises, for Schutzhund, but we'll see what happens.

If this thread is in the wrong area please feel free to move it and if it turns into slanging please lock it down.

If not, thanks in advance for any info.

I am used to using innotek but to be honest dogtra make better e-collars for the simple reason as they have more levels and smaller increments between levels.

I suggest you look at any of the high end dogtra e-collars. Make sure you do seek out an experienced trainer before you use the collar as you can easily make the problem worse.

Dogtra and Innotek are the two main brands. I have never used a Dogtra so cannot comment on them.

I have an Innotek Field Pro Ranger, and love it. Its small, streamline but effective. 100% water proof and works over a long distance.
The main reason I like this is that it is all black, and not chunky so is harder to notice on a Dobie, but having a GSD that wouldn't affect you.

I can't recomend any local suppliers as I did not buy mine from a store.
    Cheers, Jess

I would buy it from a local though, you will get much better service.

Nice and simple designed, so that you can chage your settings without looking at the unit.

    Re: Which e collar?

Local importers of electronic dog products have spent alot of money in courts defending their rights to import and our rights to use these devices in most areas of Australia. For me this is the justification to support local businesses. Costs to import are also expensive. As you would be well aware things can go wrong with electronics so having local support for your product is essential.

I'm glad to hear your getting help with using the collar because in my experience aggression can be intensified if the collar is used in the wrong way. It is important to realise that the collar can't make a dog do anything, the training method that you use with the tool is what really makes the difference.

You are probably already aware of the legislation prohibiting the use of elctronic collars in NSW but if not now you are.

As for brand of collar my preference is for the SportDog products. I literally use them all day everyday and for my style they are better than anything else available as far as ease of use (you can do everything with only 1 hand and you don't need to be constantly looking at a digital display to know what level you are working on which is for me is important when dealing with aggression). Checkout Vendo's review of the SportDog SD-1825 on this website. Very nice functional collar that has more than you will ever need. Personally I use the SD-800.

    OOps I didn't see Vendo's post before I posted

    Hope some of this helps!

    Cheers

    Chris

Thanks Chris and others for all the very helpful info. Unfortunately I've been blindsided by my lack of knowledge of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and regulations. No I wasn't aware but certainly am now.

I may just have to rethink my position...

    Re: Which e collar?

    I've used a 1902 and a 2302 - both Dogtra models.

With my GSD, nothing except the dogtra would be suitable - I need the fine tuning ability with him (127) - He is fine on level 12-13, but level 16-17 will make him yelp and carry on, level 15 visible discomfort. Occasionally his working level will increase but even in the middle of intense drive work he can still feel 15-16. The Husky could handle something with less levels as he's not so sensitive to them. I used to actually think that all dogs can handle e-collars as they're used at such low levels but I'm not so sure anymore after my GSD.

The 2302 has longer range than the 1900 but probably won't bother you (I need it though) and different on/off buttons plus some minor changes to the housing of both collars.

I very rarely (if ever) need to look at the display of mine anymore. Sometimes I won't know the precise level I am on but I can wind it up 5-10 or even 50+ levels without looking at it and always end up within 3-4 of where I wanted to be, since I am working off my dogs reaction it doesn't matter anyway. If I need to wind it up because he isn't feeling it I just wind till I get a response.

I would love it if Dogtra introduced a collar with two zapper buttons instead of the page though so I could preset one to a higher level. I've never found a dog that liked the vibrate and only my current sibe will tolerate it.

ETA: Ohhh, most important thing, battery. Mine will stay charged for about 3 days. If they run flat, 5 minutes on the charger will give me around 3/4 of a day (enough for the beach or a training session).
