    Couple of Questionson Malinois

    Gday,

I have decided to get a new dog within the next 6 months and a malinois looks high on the list. I hope to get a dobermann but the breeder I wish to get a dog from doesn't breed very often and the chances of getting one are slim hence the reason to look for an alternate breed.

My experience with malis is limited but I train with Czech line GSDs and I really like what they bring but I just can't deal with the fur! My dobermann sheds a little and I get frustrated with that already!

So my first question is does the malinois shed much fur? or is it comparable to a GSD?

I am looking for a dog that I want to use for IPO/SCH(so has to have a pedigree) but also has to be good in the house and around other animals. I also want a dog that will be good around children as I plan to start a family in the next 2 years. I am a vet and the dog will most likely be on the back of the ute out on calls for cattle, sheep, alpacas etc. I am not after a prey crazy dog as it could be a liability.

Are there malinois lines that are more calm and clear headed? I am not a fan of nervy dogs(after owning a showline dobie)

I prefer a dog with a bit of civil aggression and fight drive. I generally like a dog that has low social aggression as well as it will be running around the vet clinic and the last thing I want is it to try and nail every dog that comes in. It would also have to be friendly with clients and their children.

I know abit of the above can be dealt with through socialisation but a dog predisposed to certain traits would make it easier/harder.

So is the above possible with the malinois?
Can anyone suggest some lines in Australia that they can reccommend?(PM if u dont want it public)

    Thanks

    Jonathon

    Hi Jonathan
To answer your questions a mal or any other breed can do all of what u have stated. Research the lines well and you will find a suitable dog.
There are enough Malinois breeders in OZ that breed good stock. I would have to say in my personal opinion that show line malinois have nerve issues. I would recommend KNPV lines for stability and clear heads.(Not to say sch lines are not as good).

    [=adam VIPSS;16237]Here we go again

There is NO KNPV OR SCHUTZHUND lines.

    KNPV is a sport.

    SCHUTZHUND is a sport.

    Malinois is a breed.

Some people choose with their malinois dog to do KNPV other people choose to do SCH. others choose to do Mondio ring (another dog sport), and others choose French Ring (yet another dog sport) and so on.

And all of these sports are designed to test the dogs character and performance.

Malinois the breed excel in all of these sports.

    Hi
maybe I should be a bit clearer for the simple minded folk.
When i said KNPV or SCH lines I meant one dog bred from dogs titled in KNPV opposed to dogs bred from dogs titled in SCH
I know they are both sports....................
One sport looks for a certain trait while the other utilizes another.
When I say i like a dog from KNPV lines I say a dog that has been bred from dogs titled in KNPV. Never did I say that SCH was not a sport or that KNPV was a real test.

    Regards
    George

From what I understand to do SchH/IPO in this country you need a dog with an ANKC pedigree so that would rule out KNPV line dogs as they do not have an ANKC pedigree.

    dannys dogs are registered.
They are all registered in OZ and all come from dogs titled in KNPV or as I say KNPV lines... registered and unregistered dogs both compete in KNPV

    Thanks George.

Through the numerous registered/unregistered and ANKC/KNPV debates on here I assumed that KNPV line dogs would not be ANKC registered. It is rather confusing sometimes!
