Quality Leather Leads

Hi all, im looking at replacing my 20+ year old leather lead, and would like to know the best place to get one of good quality. i want one that will last another 20+ years like the one i have now, and perferably already quite soft (if possible). so where would yous reccommend??

I have looked around online at a few places like -
K9 Force
K9 Force Professional Dog Training & Behaviour Consultancy
Schweikert Hundesportartikel (found it on SchH Aus website)
http://www.schweikert-shop.he-hosting.de/index.php?cat=2946〈=ENG&product=6331M..F&sid240CC7 59E47642BA9A3881F088737A1A=r2cr832d473k3vk3lt608r0 1f4
Or some one like leerburg, or a local leather crafter??

and which ones are better/stronger, the weaved ones or stiched and riveted??

Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers, Jess

The best leads I have ever used are from Karenswood International Ltd. They are entirely hand made in best English bridle leather (or buffalo hide) using thread that is made up by hand from raw hemp and bees-wax. They are not cheap but if you want a lead to last 20 years, they are the ones to buy. Their tracking harnesses are equally as good.

Hi Jess

In my opinion you can't go past Kurt from Dogquip here in Adelaide. Excellent quality and good soft leather..

I agree with Mark, I have had my Dogquip leads for a few years now and can not fault them. Kurt is a prefered government supplier, his leads are used by RAAF and Police dog handlers.

Yeah, go local, Kurt at Dogquip supplies a good product and we should support our small business people in this industry.

Re: Quality Leather Leads

thanks every one for all your help and suggestions

I like the idea of keeping it local. i have bought from Kurt befor and love'd his quality and service, really helpfull and nice.
i will send him an email about it.
Do you think they would need care?? i have noticed with some of the better quality leads (like the website Peter suggested) say that they never need to be oiled, would Kurts be like this??

Peter- They're very nice looking leads!! with the dollar the way it is, i'd hate to see how much they would cost. i wish i had that sort of money Maybe in a few years time.
Incavale- I'm looking at the website now. they are Aussie too well not fully.

Thanks again everyone for your help.
Cheers, Jess

Jess,

I have not bought from Kurt so cannot speak for his leads however I do have 3 from Steve Courtney and they have been well and truly put to the test.
The premium 3/4 leads have had no care at all in the last year or so yet feel better in the hand each time. They are certainly high quality and I believe come from the same supplier as Leerburg.

I hadn’t intended to cause uproar by answering your question. I merely pointed out a supplier I had used many years ago who sold excellent quality leatherwork. We all have preferences for our equipment suppliers, as of course we do for our breed of choice, and as most of the suppliers here in Australia import their goods from Europe and the US anyway, I didn’t see a big deal in mentioning Karenswood.

I have never done business with Dogquip, but I have looked at their website and only saw bite sleeves and bitesuits, therefore my experience of their dog leads etc. is non-existent. As they seem to come highly recommended for their leads as well, I see no reason not to use them.

I hope you get what you want.
