    Jacqueline Cleworth Intro

Owner of one doberman x rottweiler. Member of the Adelaide Dog Sports Club. Very worried about the fact that many breeders today seem to only be breeding to the looks part of the standard and neglecting the temperament and purpose of the breeds - and in outlawing the sports that are used to assess their working ability - well I don't want to stand by and just watch them destroy our dogs.

I haven't heard of any Schutzhund trained dogs causing any problems - their owners have put far too much t

Hi Jacqueline welcome to the forum.

I have one of those dogs you describe from a "top" show breeding from an imported sire. His faults are temperament, coat, tail, teeth and he is oversize, nothing on this dog reflects the breed standards other than he looks like a GSD? It wasn't until I had experienced the differences of owning and training a working line GSD it amplified my poor showline dog's faults to an even greater extent?

It is really sad watching people bring their GSD's to our club, only to see the dogs hit their 'walls' so early on. What really upsets me is that so many people found the club through their 'pet' GSD, only to find that their dog was in no way capable of achieving any titles and so now they have 2 dogs (one from working lines). They still love their other 'show' dogs, but the way I see it, if you wanted a dog as a cuddle companion and didn't care about working ability, well, why choose working breeds? The dogs a lot of these breeders are breeding look great, but they actually don't have great temperaments. Their nerves are so thin that they easily become fear aggressive and you can't control them in those states. I was looking for a doberman for 2 years, and met with the breeders who owned the current and recent Grand Champions. Their dogs greeted me by rolling over onto their backs the moment they saw me. Now, I believe that any doberman should accept people you want in your house (not very useful as a personal guardian if you can't take them anywhere), but no barking, and rolling over upon first meeting them in my mind is not breeding to the standard. I just don't understand why the breeders chose working breeds in the first place when they have no interest whatsoever in the working ability of the dogs...

Anyway great to meet you guys, looking forward to learning lots from this forum as I'm still very new to the sport myself.

That's exactly what we did Jacqueline, our show dog hit a brick wall meeting Rhino at the club wanting to eat him as we got the dog out of the car, Rhino said "oh shit" I will get Micheal over for a chat!!. We will be coming back to the club in the new year with Bronson our working line GSD, will catch up with you then. Have you seen Cathy's Dobe, she is a nice bitch from what I have seen of her training? I remember a super cute showline pup Micheal was trying to get some prey drive out of, she was a gorgeous looking pup from a top show breeder and the flattest pup in drive I have ever seen and the look of confusion on the owners faces, like we bought her from XYZ kennels and paid ABC for her, her parents are Australian champions and breed survyed etc etc, why is she no good for a sport designed around GSD's???. Our show dog has drive, he's a great jumper, good on the A board, if he had temperament he could do the sport physically, this poor little pup had nothing but a cute face, very disappointing a GSD was bred like that or ours for that matter??.
