    Training the Decoy

    Hi there,

I have recently started with my first working dog, and have started as well with learning to be a decoy in an effort to be useful in training with the people who are helping me as well.

Since I have taken to seriously learning and developing my knowledge and skills in dog training, i have found that the hardest training has been of myself.

Understanding and knowledge are one thing, but practically i have found it quite challenging. there are many things to concentrate on, the dog - it's body language, verbalisation, timing, there is the handler, distance as well as what i am trying to do in relation to these fluid conditions and my effect on these changing conditions.

I have my bad days and my good days. On my bad days i feel more that I let down the people and dogs i am trying to help than myself, as much as i am hard on myself.

Just wondering on some of you guys who are experienced helpers, how did you go learning and working through the hard times? Your experiences?

    many thanks in advance.

The first trainer I started decoying with had me do the following
    - have 3 people: You (decoy) 2nd (human dog) 3rd (handler). the trainer would give out different senerios for me to do, the HD would act them out and use there hands to bite my arm, legs & body. "this helps you to understand how to much with the dog from cushioning into yourself while the dog comes at you, how to go with the motion of the dog, to target biting.
    - the other thing would be he would work a dog, have me stand there and watch the dog (only the dog) and while working the dog would ask me what I was seeing in the dog body lang, fear to aggresssion. he would also have me look for the different drives.

Now I myself have started creating a work out routine to help condition my body for the impact its gonna go thru. I am really pleased with how I am progressing to be stronger in areas that are very needed. from Core of body to knees to shoulders.

When catching the dog dont be mad at yourself for when you did wrong but learn from the mistakes, ask what you did wrong so you can think about it and figure out how you can create a better way to solve it and do better.
I have video tape myself decoying all the time and I watch over and over again to see how I am progressing, I actually take my videos as if I am in class. I have a journel of how I am doing what I have done and what my mistakes are.

Best of luck in the decoy world.

Thanks Amy, a while after, and watching videos and the other decoys work, I slowed everything down so I didn't rush and it was 100 times better. Practice makes perfect, so I am keeping at it.

I always forget how much energy it takes to hold and wrestle with working dogs, particularly Rotti's...

Thanks again for the advice and encouragement.

    Johnny
