hi
i havnt had much to do with shepards but taping is a popular way to fix there ears
the way i was shown was cut some foam in the shape needed then tape it to the ear but i cant remb how long though
Hello everyone, i am a new member, actully i just stumbled across this site and i love it! Although i have family in Melbourne, I myself am from Macedonia. Anyway, i wonder if anyone could help me - i got a baby belgian malinois that won`t raise her ears. She is five months old and her ears are flopping, she can raise them but they won`t stay raised. This is my first malinois, i`ve had german shepherds before, and every malinois that I have seen so far, has raised ears since 5-6 weeks. Can anyone tell me , is it normal for this breed to raise their ears at a later time, or should her ears have already been raised? I mean, it may seem as a silly question, but i`ve raised lots ov GSD`s and I know what to expect at what time of age in terms of development of the dog, but i`m still learning about the malinois. I would apreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

I think it’s not a general thing, some dogs raise their ears early some later. Usually if they’ve finished teething their ears can begin to come up, but if you are particularly concerned give the pup a couple of big marrow bones occasionally; this can help. I really wouldn’t worry.....ears up or ears down...a good dog is a good dog, unless you plan on showing it.
Taping with a support of a popsicle stick and surgical tape can work as a last resort.

Thanks for the advice gyus! I think that teething is our main problem, so i`m thinking of taping her ears just to help her along. Well I guess we`ll see the end result in a few months ! I`ll keep you posted!
Yes as the others have already said time/age/tape. Masking tape works well too....
I don't think I've seen a Mal with floppy ears as an adult...
Good luck, would love to see a pic if you get a chance.
we used to use Popsicle sticks and either "micro pause"(I'm not sure if that's how its spelled, but its a breathable tape, for things like sport injuries) or masking tape. if you look at an American cropped breed website you can get a lot info on how to tape it right(breeds like Great Danes and Dobermanns)
its funny cause here in Aus(in the show industry) they have to weight some breeds of dogs ears down.
Good luck. Keep us updated on how its going.
Cheers, Jess

I wouldnt bother taping her ears if she is teething, I would do as summit K9 has said and give her more things to chew on.
She can make her ears stand up so I wouldnt be too worried about them.
I agree with Summit and Jeff
Some dogs just take a little longer. My GSD didn't have his ears fully up until around 9 months of age.
I too wouldnt tape just yet, if she is only young and teething I wouldnt tape, but in saying that if you wait to long they may not come up at all, I had a malinois male afew years ago his ears didnt properly raise until 11 months and yet some of his litter mates raised at 6 weeks.
Thanks everyone for the input. Well, she actually finished teething about three weeks ago, so I did tape her ears. It only took two weeks and her ears are nice and raised now. Maybe I should have waited a bit, but I figured it would be ok to tape after teething. An e-book that I found was pretty helpful, about taping GSD pups ears, from the leerburg kennel site. I also e-mailed some malinois breeders in the nearby countries, and I found out that it`s not uncommon for working line malinois to have problems with their ears, because they are bred for strong drive and not looks, and some can have exterior flaws, such as floppy ears.
Anyways, she is about six and a half months old now and her ears are straight and no flopping. I created an album here, so anyone can take a look - the pic with the muzzle is taken a couple of days ago, and the other one is taken when we took the tape off. I also put a couple of pics of my GSD - a 9 yrs old female.
