    Twisted Bowel

My Aunt's 6yo GSD has twisted bowel syndrome she has it at the vet where it's being operated on.
Just wanted some information on the condition and what she should do to help the dog recover (hopefully).

    Gday Martin,

Twisted bowel can be caused by a number of reasons. Some are eating things they dont usually eat(garbage), cancer, rigorous exercise, trauma.
When the intestine twists it cuts off the blood supply causing that part of the intestine to die. Surgery involves resecting the dead bit of intestine out and joining the good bits of the intestine back together. Prognosis is not usually good.

After the surgery you dont want to overload the intestines as they have sutures holding it together so split the feeding up into many small meals. Easily digestible food is also reccomended. Usually dependng on how much bowel they took out the dog will have diarrhea and soft faeces for the rest of its life.

    Hope all goes well.

    cheers

    Jonathon
