    Paw Soreness

Montu has sore paws, both front ones.

Underneath and between the toes are red and they look mildly inflamed. From what I can tell, there is no actual damage to his pads and no cuts and bruising.

Last night during training I made him jump rather high, higher than usual but not by much, as he took off in the jump he yelped then yelped when he landed. There was nothing on the ground which makes me think he has stretched them or something.

A vet is an option, however I managed to lose both of his basket muzzles (along with his leads, his spare two collars and his tugs) in the move to Sydney and he is aggressive towards vets. I have a material muzzle but I don't entirely trust it on him when he gets aggressive and right now, I can't afford to replace the muzzle.

So for now I've just soaked them in salt water and applied a bit of manuka honey.

Montu has always been a princess when it comes to these kinds of injuries. He'll keep training and work through them but he carries on like it is the end of the world. Obviously he is going to be quiet now and I won't work him but things like this make him whine like crazy and when the vet see's the injuries he usually just gives a shot of pain killers to shut him up then he tends to forget about it as the pain killers wear off.

Anyway, other than a vet is there anything else I can do? Any creams which are good for this kind of injury? He is walking fine, even running fine. It's when a human touches near it that he puts on a show. This relates to his puppy months as he was injured a lot back then. If he was showing any lameness when walking then he'd be going to the vet immediately but for this I am not sure it is necessary.

if he has warn or soft pads i would just wipe them over once a day with metho for a week then see how it goes
the metho will harden up the pads

but if he has a alerge or an infection iam not sure what to try
    Regards

As far as I can tell there is no infection, no cuts, it's just very red.

I'm thinking maybe he sprained something? He seems better already but still isn't thrilled with me touching his front paws and they're still visibly red.

I'll try the metho on his paws and see how he goes.

    Thanks

Could he have stepped on something which has caused the irritation? Be careful if he has sensitive pads with using metho.

Another possibility.... is he a run dog? Some run dogs chew and lick their paws through stress/boredom.Usally it's only one/two pads they concentrate on.Then they become "sensitive" when using them.

Might be worth a x ray...... if he persists with the issue.

He possibly could have, there isn't much on the ground though. Maybe bee stings or even ant bites. I'll check the yard out a bit more once it dries out.

He used to be a run dog, now he is a yard dog and partially inside dog (and funnily enough, since bringing him inside for a few hours a day he has improved).

He does chew and lick his feet, it's also entirely possible his new dog pal (who lives with him quite a bit) has injured him. She's put a few bite marks on his neck whilst playing.

I'll keep an eye on him, if it doesnt improve then he'll have to be sedated and x-rays taken.

I personally would not self medicate , you could make things worse.
All vets have muzzles , at hand .
Dogs are not whingers like humans , if they show pain then they are in pain .
    Just my opinion .
I hope you sort it out.
I would get the dog to a vet soon.

    Re: Paw Soreness

Just called a Vet, they're going to call me back with an appointment time.

He's gotten worse, his back legs are now where he is having a whinge, well, his entire hind quarter. I opened his crate this morning and he didn't want to get out - that's unusual for him. He's licking his paw right now whining and crying because it hurts to do so.

Sounds like his problem is more than feet. Good luck at the vet.

How old is Montu? Just curious as to how high he has been jumping and how often?

    Fingers crossed it's nothing serious.

    18 months or so.

I only encourage him to jump in drive training, but not high, 1-2ft. The time he hurt himself though it was a 7ft jump - I had raised the toy up to throw it and he leapt for it.

He obviously jumps of his own accord when outside, jumping at birds and stuff.
