    Hi Blackdog,

Yes Dogs SA....Have been talking with a number of people wanting more from the club and the club not giving what we need. Might start another group yet. My big girl is bored with it so we have stopped going, about to take my pup on my terms.
We do agility here now which is good but they compete, so we get in the way,lol
oh the doggie world is such a struggle, lol

Ha ha Blackdog, well I guess I never know where I'll end up after graduation. Overseas is definitely an option since I have to pay off this student loan somehow! Depends who offers me a job, and who looks fun to work for.

Good on you persuading your club to accept titre results. I think more and more clubs and boarding kennels will start to accept these over the next few years in lieu of vaccination certificates. It just takes people like yourself to get the ball rolling.

Rob, that's a worry about those eye drops! Was it a known side effect of the treatment, or just one of those random unfortunate things?

    Hi Staranais,

You can have a job here and it will take you no time to pay you study bill.
The vets here ask more than any other vet.

They just quoted $700 for hip and elbow x-ray, 250 km away quoted $300.
I went to Port Hedland northern WA, 4500 km north west from here and the vets where cheaper than here.
Vets that come to work here have to sign a contract to say they will never work in the area once they work for the vets. That stops others opening their own business. A lot don't stay long because they don't want to charge the prices the vets have set.
A friend of mine had a Shetland foul, a couple of days old dropped to the ground. After $2000 of treatment, told it had to do with it breathing in the dust, it dropped again. Oh they realised they where wrong and treated her for an infected umbilicord, another $1000, for a $200 horse. She had to pay the whole bill.
A question, if a vet gets it wrong why do you have to pay for their mistake..
Is there a body we can go to to complain.
I only say this because the vets here make a lot of mistakes and we are forced to pay it or go without a vet..
I used to go to the Uni, to the vets training ground in Newcastle to get my animals fixed, and because it was so cheap I didn't mind paying for animals that didn't belong to anyone, for many different ailments, to help them get a home. Sue was the best vet I'd ever come by, my dogs would run in without me to the clinic, now that's the kind of vet I'd love to have here..
Do you have a clinic at your school and if so there might be people here that might want to use it..
It has been great reading what you put here and I'd like to hear more.
As time goes on I know there will be more things I'd like to ask, and the best thing is if you don't know it, you have teachers to ask....
    kind regards Ena

Wow, that's crazy expensive! I got both of my little girl's elbows done (including sedation) a few weeks ago, and the bill was only $150. Granted that was "mates rates" at our university's teaching hospital, but it wouldn't have been too much more for a member of the public to have done. $800 sounds far too expensive for just a few regular radiographs.

Mind you, I wonder how much is going to the practice manager/owner, and how much is going to the actual vet who treats your animal. Unfortunately, high fees for pet owners don't always translate into high wages for the new vets.

This is a link to information about where you go to report a negligent vet in Australia (had to look it up since we're a little different over here):
    http://www.complaintline.com.au/vet.html

If it's like in NZ, they won't automatically censure the vet just on your word. They will investigate whether the vet made a reasonable mistake (one that even the best vet could have made given the information available at the time), or whether they made a mistake through being negligent. In the first case, the vet won't get in trouble, in the second case, they might (especially if several people complain about them).

Glad you found it useful. It's helpful for me to go back and re-read my study notes, so feel free to ask vetty questions at any time - though I can't promise I'll always have the answers!

Thank you for that, I only gave one case, know many more people have had to pay for many other things.

The owner is one of the vets, aging and not well a lot. Though he compared my dogs ECG with his own, being the reason for wanting to go on with more tests, lol
I went elsewhere and found nothing wrong after $2500 bill, thanks Pet Plan pet insurance. I wasn't left wondering if there really was something wrong, I went to the specialists to find out that by going through another vet to get the referral.
They are in it for the money and the town knows that but they provide what we need most of the time and the other little place we have charge the same rate but offer less hours. I find they spend a lot of time grooming, $$$ in it.

When I took my 9 week old pup for the first check up, the young vet wanted us to desex her and found ourselves spending the time arguing over it. Told her I didn't pay $1000 extra to breed her to have her desexed. I was back a week later because there was a small problem she didn't look for which could have been solved earlier.
They make you vaccinate an adult dog 2 times if you don't have proof of past needles, do you do it twice?
