Plant and Food Toxicity and your dog

Just thought I would post some info on things that can poison and kill our dogs. It is an excerpt from the RSPSA site and there are other websites that you can go into from this to do some more research and then take a look around your backyard and in your kitchen cupboards. I know alot of us on this site would know most of these but for the newbies I feel this is useful. Especially after reading the post about the Cocoa Mulch. A friend of ours dog developed serious epilepsy and after much searching for the cause found that she had been cracking open plum pips and eating them.
Anyone out there who's dog, or someone they know's dog, has had a toxic reaction to food or plants please put it on this thread. It will be a good resource that is easily accessed on this site.

Where can I find out about plants that might be poisonous for my pets?

The US animal welfare organisation ASPCA runs a national poisons control centre for pets which includes a list of the most frequently encountered plants that have been reported as having systemic effects on pets and/or intense effects on the gastrointestinal tract. The link to the list is:
    http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer...cc_toxicplants

The list includes information on each plant, for example:

    Common Name: Australian Nut
    Scientific Name: Macadamia integrifolia
    Family: Proteaceae
    Toxic Principle: unknown
Clinical signs: depression, hyperthermia, weakness, muscular stiffness, vomiting, tremors, increased heartrate. Only reported in dogs at this time.

The website also contains a list of reported non-toxic plants.

The University of Illinois Veterinary Medicine Library also has a good database of plants toxic to animals (including photos and detailed description of the effects of the plants on animals):

Cornell University has a poisonous plants information database, which is arranged by type of pet:
    http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/anispecies.html

There are also a few web sites which list plants dangerous to cats:

    http://www.i-love-cats.com/Health/plants.htm
    http://tasc.freeservers.com/forowners/Plants.htm

Unfortunately, there is less information available on Australian plants. A couple of papers have been written on the topic but they have more relevance to livestock than pets:

Other links on toxicity are also available from the University of Sydney Veterinary Education and Information Database:
