    GSD History

I dared to pose this in the *other* dog forum and now regret it.

Anyway. I simply do not believe the GSD was bred as a herding dog only. Ever. IMO, it's purpose was never herding.

I believe it was bred from herding dogs as a utility/multi-purpose dog.

My reason is simply. Schuhtzhund started in 1901. The GSD was "born" in 1899. Lets pretend Schuhtzhund took 6months to a year to create so Schuhtzhund creation started in 1900. The fact that they created schuhtzhund shows they needed to test them, schuhtzhund contains protection, which implies that GSDs were doing protection.

So, because of the short period of time (1899-1900) I find it impossible to believe that they were bred with the intention of only being a herding dog.

How does everyone else view it? I was obviously met by opposition on the other site :P

I don't think everyone in the *other* forum was totally disagreeing with you.

In a way a matter of semantics. I think the GSD was originally a herding dog, but also had other qualities, and that these other qualities were then expanded on to make the GSD the utilitarian Jack of All Trades we see it to now be. I agree with whoever said this was partly brought about by the decline in the need/use of the GSD as a herding dog.

Not everyone Midol.......Take a look at the Modern GSD thread. I do not see the GSD as a dog who was about to decline within 2 years if it's creation. Then again that would be a nicer picture for those whose dogs are incappable of the breeds real task wouldn't it

    Cheers,

    Re: GSD History

l would say there was a selection from herding dogs . Those that had certain traits were used , they developed a specific test for those traits. A separate working breed was developed on that basis. l wouldnt think a prime herding dog would have to be abandoned due to lack of herding, as there are still plenty of herding dogs around today. But you could still say "they were once herders" as that is in their heritage. I think you just have to go to a breeder that selects for what you want, that applies in any breed. Ancient history is just that..
