    To train the stay command?

I was thinking about this over the weekend, I know this is common practice amongst majority of trainers, that when we tell our dogs to either sit or down they must stay in that position until released, can anybody see a need to train an additional stay command on top off that? is there any practical use for it?

Well i personally do i train the sit at a young age and as they get older have a higher expectation of holding that sit as such supplement that with a stay is they decide to move but i guess i could have just re enforced the sit ?? LOL

Thats what im getting at, a dog should stay in a sit or a down until we let them know otherwise provided we have worked on the duration and distance of the exercise so we have taught them what is expected, but is there a practical reason for teaching a stay?

In obedience training years ago we were always taught to train the stay and we did use it to reinforce the sit etc and I did the same with my GSD until going to Schutzhund training and they told us not to bother with the stay just reinforce the given command???. My Retriever and older GSD is "stay" trained the young one isn't specifically and doesn't seem to make much difference either way I don't think??.

The only thing I can add is if the dog is in that position naturally and you want it to stay as it is.
One of my dogs I used “stay” as a stand or hold its position as it was so mid walk “stay”. With Rakker I used stay; until it was pointed out to me I was using “stay” to reassure my self.

Lol I do the same thing Vendo, i have never purposely trained the stay command, but sometimes i let it slip not meaning to, most likely to reassure myself....

The only time I use the 'stay' command is when they are in 'release mode' and I want them to stay there. Eg if they are already in a pen or if they are in a room and I am leaving the room and don't want them to follow me.
    Cheers, Jess
