    Training in the heat

How do people handle training their dogs in the heat?

Montu won't drink whilst we're doing any training. He also won't drink for a considerable time afterwards - at least half an hour. He's usually covered in foam (from his mouth obviously) within a minute of working.

When it's over 30 degrees I'm not sure if I am comfortable training him anymore. His refusal to drink and the fact that he is clearly dehydrated (or at least needing water) is making me very cautious. I used to be of the belief that dogs will always drink/eat and won't let themselves starve but when Montu lost almost 8kg of pure muscle because he was being a fussy eater I changed my view. He was eating the bare minimum to survive and eventually I had to give in and give him a different type of food so after that I am not confident that he WILL drink before he faces problems.

Personally, I hate training him in anything over 24 as I get too hot :P

my trainer old dog use to not drink when in work mode as well and what he did was use a small spray bottle and wet his nose and a quick spay in the mouth and that was enough to keep him going

or you just want to keep the temp down

ray allen make a nice cool vest that the dogs can still work in

Midol if you think it's wrong it probably is.

My working male doesn't train in the heat and if it is still to warm of a night, we skip the day. I understand that SEC dogs have to work in all conditions but if you are training properly you shouldn't fear skipping a session.

If your animal lacks the common sense to regulate itself by backing off and rehydrating....then it is up to you to find a balance between training and the dogs well being. Work out how to read a dog and half your issues will be solved straight away.

    Hi Micheal,

I have a pair of black german shepherds and the heat bothers both of them but we got 45 today, lol
If training or rabbit chacing I will limit it. 10 minutes rather than 30 min. And I will judge it at the time, hot cool breeze, walk, run? like tonight hot and hotter breeze we don't go.

    Maybe think of half classes,

I have had dogs in the past the can run for miles in the heat, it all depends on the dog.

    Re: Training in the heat

I normally do a training session at lunch time when my toddler has a nap. With this heat I have been scaling that training right back, working only on simple fairly stationary exercises (targetting, focus, holding dumbell, start line behaviours for agility, walking through a ladder for hind end awareness). Luckily there are a few of these I can do I save the more serious exercise type training for the evening when it cools down. Bit of a bummer as I can't do as much, but better than overheating everyone.

    Hi Michael,
You certainly have a problem, fluids must be kept up during or straight after training. Had similar issues with my Rottweiler, couldn't fix it so i thought it better to neuter her and retire her to the couch.

Now have a Malinois, she has great food drive and works well in the heat.
Just provide water and let her go for a swim in the creek.

I guess the important question is what you use your dog for? If he is not a working dog than you have the luxury of not training it when it is to hot, however if you use it for work than I guess it is conditioning your dog to all weather conditions. But keep in mind his limitations and don’t overdo it.
