    Training an adult dog

    Hi all,
thought i'd post this up here as the forums been a bit quite lately.

I have recently adopted an older dog (around 4 or 5)
and would like to know if any one here has experience with training an older dog from scratch. He pretty much knows nothing, but is an extremely quick leaner and picks things up really fast.

If any one has any tips, suggestions or anecdotes post em up.

    Thanks.
    Cheers, Jess

    Hi
What you want to train for?
Have trained some older dogs for personal protection/security.
All I found is that they need to have confidence coupled with prey drive.

    regards

    Hi George, thanks.

Nothing in particular as of yet.
was just sort of a general question.

he has settled in quite well now so will have some friends have a look at him and see what they think.
    Cheers, Jess

Good luck with it. I find older dog can be easy to train if they
haven't been hurt by it before.
Try food rewards, ball if that is it's like.
Let us know how it all goes and what training worked.

    Thanks Ena,

Food does seem to be his primary motivator. although he does love playing tug, but for now that does more harm than good as its too much for him and the focus is only for the toy.
Once his obedience is better i will hopefully be able to move to prey based rewards.
    Cheers, Jess

    Hi kalexte

Have you attempted doing his obedience through his toys, through prey?

I hear what you are saying, he needs obedience.Perhaps though if he has great focus for the toy, you can make that to your advantage...

Teach him commands, reward with toy but only with you. He will make the association you equates fun, that equals better be obedient!

    Cheers
