    Line breeding???

    Folks,

Can someone explain what linebreeding is intended to produce. I understand the concepts of it in terms of locking in particular traits, but as an example, I have seen a nice GSD pup linebred 2-4 on Fax vom Grenzganger. Does it mean the traits of the pup should resemble Fax more so than the parents, or what is the relationship to Fax in this case to be expected???.

    Cheers
    Nev

    Hi Nev,
perhaps Laurie could enlighten you as he seems to pride himself with his line breeding.
It is in alot of his advertising, when selling pups.

    regards

    Laurie ,
    Settle down ,
that was in no way a dig at you, and no I do not keep tabs on you,
You advertise just as i do , and when i see your ads. you always put line bred on this and that etc.
You seem to do alot more of it than any one else.
So do not flatter your self to much.
Grow up and draw the line a little.

    Laurie,
    is this necessary?
I have been in dogs alot longer than you, why would I not peruse dogzonline?WAS A MEMBER LONG BEFORE YOU EVER WERE AND STILL AM.
Up until maybe a few weeks ago did you not have a Litter advertised in the Trading Post, if I remember right, that ad ran for sometime.
Why would I not peruse what is selling and what isn't. When I am also running ads.
When we spoke you always prided your self on your line breeding, silly me I obviously thought you knew what you were doing and why .
    My apologies.
Laurie I do not have to keep tabs on you. I know what you breed I see it at my place all the time, I had one of your dogs here 2 weeks ago it was over shot by more than half an inch, was walking all stupid and was bred from a pair with a combined hip score of 54. The chap came here to buy a bitch to breed with it, I sent him scarpering. Poor guy. Poor dog, it was sad.
These are the side effects of line breeding and you need to be prepared to cull, and know what you are doing.
Maybe the ANKC do not enforce these issues themselves , but they expect us to abide by their codes of ethics.
I culled a whole litter last week because it was overshot, cannot be selling that kind of stock as these people that do not know any better run around trying to find a mate for a dog that should not be bred from.

    Nev,
I think he is only here to have snipes at me, he can go for it as much as he likes. He sits there like a preying mantis waiting for me to slip up, so he can jump on me instead of contributing, now ,watch this Mark will have a go at me.

    regards

    Rob

Seeing as no one has answered I will try to Nev.Line breeding is done to lock in desirable traits of a certain individual or related individuals and concentrate up that blood to produce in its likeness. There are different schools of thought but most people who breed dogs will try it at some stage. Some people like to breed best to best of unrelated dogs. Its hard to say wether pup would be more like the grandfather than the parents becuase of the line breeding as traits dont equal pedigrees but that is the desired effect to produce dogs in the likeness of the ancestors they are linebred off and done correctly it can work.If you have that phenomenal dog you want to try and reproduce it, right?
The supposed difference between line breeding and inbreeding is in line breeding you breed grandfather/ grandaughter or cousin to cousin or dogs that share the same grandparent.Inbreeding you breed brother to sister and father to daughter.1/2 brother half sister etc...
I have dogs that are line bred and some a little inbred.I dont have a problem with half brother half sister matings but I wont do father daughter matings and eventually you have to outcross or you close the gene pool and lose vigour and can end up with health problems if you arent careful. It also depends on the breed and how many related ancestors they are bred from.My experience is with a certain breed that has been heavily line bred and inbred in some circumstances without many problems and I believe this is becuase there genetic diversity and wide gene pool in the first place of unrelated dogs/breeds has lent to it very well and that may not be the case when dealing with other breeds. You need to study pedigrees and individuals and know them before embarking on it and now the pros and cons.Hope that helps.
