Hand raising or supplement feeding new born puppies

I have partially hand raised and supplemented a few litters now and I am currently hand raising a pug puppy. This is the first time I have had to do it on my own, usually I have the bitch to co feed so to speak but this time the mum has no milk. I usually give pups goats milk with a little yogurt in it and that was enough as they had mum too. However this time the goats milk was just not enough, I tried to give the pup Di-Vetelact and he hated it. So I went looking and remembered the Leerburg site.

    Leerburg | Bottle Feeding Puppies

This formula has not only saved this puppy but has saved my sanity. He has gone from a pup who was very hard to feed, easily tired and constipated. He is now 3 weeks old and I have pulled my hair out just keeping him going - 3 days on the Leerburg formula he is thriving. He is easy to feed and loves it.

To those who either supplement or hand raise pups I can not recommend this enough. It is similar to what I used to give pups but with a lot more yogurt and Karo syrup.

Just thought I should share this link because of the difference it has made to my puppy.

I have used the Karo before with divetalac. What I have done in the pass also is obtain goat colostrum from a dairy. They keep it on hand frozen for the same reason. If you live near one you might want to ask them or contact an association and they can point you to a dairy.

Shane, I usually get goats milk directly from a goat farm in Drouin but with only one pug it is easier to buy it by the litre from the supermarket. I wasn't worried about colostrum because mum had some milk at first. She was a fabulous mum with her 1st litter of 5 pups which is why I think the C section put her off this time. She wasn't interested in the pup and was digging the bedding exposing him to the heat pad which dehydrated him, when I got him through that she squashed him and I thought that was it. She has settled down now, even though she is dry she is looking after him every other way. Just thought sharing the link was well worth it because of the difference it has made with this pup. Good idea to get some colostrum in advance though, will make sure I have it in the freezer next time.
