l think it strange that if you could put one of the old foundation studs of many of the working breeds in a show today, under a different name, he would be placed last and ignored.
l have no interest in showing and have no fixation on breed, so my opinion is from off the field really. l preferred the days when dogs were known by their job description. War dog, bird dog, sheep dog, bull dog, rat terrier , guard dog . People bred up useful dogs based on success at their job, sadly most of the real jobs are gone and aesthetics dictates the direction of "breeds".
l am too old fashioned, l know Tony

I have been thinking on this so much the last few years, and it is correct definitely. What can the judge honestly do in their profession when breeding is what they must actually judge? The requirement for work is minimal and people know this. As peoples needs change so do the dogs being bred. Money and the drive for it play significantly in kennel clubs so I believe if judges all around the world were to say I refuse to "judge" anything then they would be a minority and be left without judging appointments.Showing IMO is a hobby for the breed enthusiast because working is not a necessity anymore. Like dog sport is more of a hobby now rather then purely temperament assessment.Though absolutely nothing alike. They are activities to do.

A great many in Rottweilers for example cringe at the idea of this breed being bred for traits such as aggression etc because in todays society who really needs such hard animals? They are looked upon as a threat to the breeds existence, even in Germany itself the Rottweiler is deemed no different to the pitbull with it's reputation here in Oz and abroad. So keeping them and showing them is another way for people to experience them. Not an excuse necessarily to not work them. The Grading is important for breeding potential IMO not so much taking out a puppy for the day which is great fun for them anyway. I do admire some efforts though for the Nationals, lots of physical preparation goes into those animals so it's considered "work" for them and they do call it that. Also the breed club does have a Breed survey, again not a character evaluation test like the BST overseas but nonetheless a test.Be a great way for people who don't enjoy showing to come along and get the dogs a pass to just say hey, my working dog can also complete a survey.

Just some food for thought.Plz note i am not a showie but have tinkered a little.

    Cheers
    Amy

    Re: Breeding Goals?

My personal goal is to breed, own, train and handle a dobermann to its show Championship title and a sch title (other then BH). Preferably a female.
A dog that will live for longer then 10 years without significant health problems. And be also a family pet.

From what I know, there so far, has only ever been one bitch in Australia that had a championship and a sch title.

If anyone that gets one of my pups would take the dog to the ch and sch titles as well Id be stoked twice as much.

And because I have this goal I get "picked" on by both the show and "working" worlds. Gotta love it, I agree and dissagree with most people

Dobermans, Rottis and GSD's now for instance look nothing like the original dogs did.
Chris I dont think the dobes looks changed THAT much. GSD - hell yes!!
