Why do law enforcement agencies, in the USA, UK, and Australia, prefer GSD before Malinois?
Economically spoken, a Malinois is cheaper, more drives and healthier?
Has someone a explanation for this?
Just wondering.

Does not make sence to me.
yup stuck in their ways and really, it comes down to being isolated especially here in Australia. It's too expensive to send staff overseas all the time to learn new techniques and get experience so they stick to what they know. It is a shame especially when they just wont even open their ears to the prospect of trying or learning off people who know the breed ... as I was told 'Malinois are shit dogs and we don't want to use them, all they do is cry and spin in their runs'.
In Australia malinois is not cheaper.
Police depts have spent tens of thousands of dollars sourcing bloodlines for their breeding programs. They arn't in the position to scrap them for malinois.
We don't have that many lines of malinois available and some of the lines that the police dept had available to them didn't perform well (ie too nervy). First impressions last unfortunately.
Also they are going with a proven breed for them.
In our Military we had a puppy training program, a few years ago.
They got some puppy’s from the German Military breeding program (for free) and started training them.
The end result was that even they did not pay for the puppy’s, the costs where to high and for this money they could have bought a titled dog over here. The worst thing was they where crap, no good at all.
There are allot of countries tried this “ puppy breeding programs” in the past…..it does not work.
If you calculated all the costs, staff, veterinarian, housing, food and the fact that, if they are honest, not all the dogs will pass the tests, it is too expensive. It just gifs some people a job, that is all.
For what it is word, this is just my opinion.
A question: How would a Mal cope living in the officer's family home when off duty?
Just like a GSD they are not all fit for sthis but there are enough who can. It is just depending on the lines and the dogs that you buy. I know allot of MWD and police dogs that live in the house with the family.
No problems at all.
The SA police don't. About twice a year they advertise on the Channel 7 News for GSD donations males between 12 and 20 months old, most of the SA police dogs are showlines which questions the level of dog work wise they find suitable? They don't seem to use GSD's of bloodlines that produce crazy drives either in some states which appears they are settling for a more sedate type, so a Malinois would be way over the top for them I would imagine in that case?.
I don't know how high a level they train in protection, in the crunch they have a two way radio and a gun to back the dog up?. There are a few grey areas in police dog quality, in SA anyway IMHO?
I think they are just stuck in their way. And these days there probably isnt a huge focus on the protection side of things, and for the everyday public seeing a GSD would probably be more intimidating that a Mali.
The air force base up near Darwin (I think it's in Katherine) have Malis. From what I've heard they never get out of their runs and are just nuts (but do you blame them?). There just not a big enough demand for their use.
Cheers, Jess
