Working the potential Brood Bitch ?

l have been interested in the different opinions of the recent "interview with " posts about working the females.
ln my view l like to see that the females are as tested, work and temperament wise as the Stud. l think their is less room for error if you know the mother is stable and committed to the work you desire. l prefer to see them worked a few years before they are bred, so you can see the true nature and how they handle the training and working regime you are going to put her pups through.
Just my opinion, look forward to other views on breeding programs
    thanks Tony

Re: Working the potential Brood Bitch ?

    Hi Tony,
my sentiments exactly , I have been preaching this to all , and I practice it in my breeding program , and have done for a long time, as it is my view that the bitch raises the pups , and it is she that instills the temperament into the pups , and her reactions to things that they pick up off her.
I have never bought a pup from a bitch that is not stable and hard herself. And I would never breed from a bitch that does not have the temperament that I am looking for .
I get good results from this methodology.

    regards

    Rob

I have also dedicated into my breeding program that the bitch must be successful in genes, health and workability prior to selecting a male that may suit and be compatable with the solid female.

    hey all
I atotally agree with all of you. If Mum isnt what u want dont buy a pup....
She should have the stability and workability you are looking for in a dog.

There are many things to factor in when breeding. Like Jasada said Gene's is a must, but dont forget temperament, size and health.

I feel that the bitch must be the strongest in all assets and areas when being considered for breeding. The male is as important but there to help compliment what the bitch has to offer.
Although sometimes this does not work to our advantage, this is why we need to keep precise records of all dogs n bitches and their breedings (if you get what i mean)
I only say this because i once brought a lil bitch who i wanted to do sport with, her sire was a very well known dog and her mother had some very well known imported working dogs behind her, but unfortunately at around 6 months of age she just stopped growing and was way to small for a bitch.
Sometimes Genetics play the upper hand...

    Good topic tho!

I believe we should look at all sides of the pedigree.Bitches make up 50% after all. To not know the bitch properly is to not know your breeding or your puppies.

I queried this subject in another thread so my views are in a couple of places. Know the weakness/strength's and breed accordingly. No such thing as a perfect dog or bitch. It's all a calculated risk but it helps to learn as much as one can whether they are buying a dog or breeding one.

As far as unregistered dogs go,the same applies, know the Bitch and breed her on her merits, temperament and physicality is of the upmost Importance.

Bitches contribute slightly more than 50% of the pup's genes. Unlike the sire, the dam also affects the health of the pups in utero, and affects the health and temperament of the pups after birth.

I wouldn't buy a pup if I didn't really like the mother, no matter who the father was.

On the other hand, if the dam's father is titled or working, and her brothers are titled or working, then that's probably a good indication that she's good genetic material, even if she isn't titled herself.
