choosing the right home guard/pp dog

hey, im looking to get a pp/gaurd dog in the near future , still abit undecided about breeds , the mrs would like a doberman , but as ive been reading there not quite what they once were!? i personally like american bulldogs but there hard to find a good working example....

are there any working breeders of any shepherd breeds in sydney and training groups for pp work ??

There used to be a few training groups in Sydney but they have died down, the only regular training of protection dogs that I know of is now done by private trainers and security companies.

    Regal German Shepherds

    Schutzshep & Schutzdobe Kennels Australia

    BEYCHIEF GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS

Are some German Shepherd breeders in NSW which may have something suitable coming up. I would not exclude looking in other states for the right dog though, you can find several breeders of working line dogs on this website by looking in the breeders directory.

Just a question Hazko - do you know how much training is involved in traning personal protection dog? Are you aware of the costs associated with such training. Not to mention the time involved? Have you got the knowledge to train such dog?
Then another question is - do you really need a fully trained personal protection dog or are you looking for a pet with guarding instincts.

Im not having a go in any way, Im asking. I hear all the time tht people want a personal protection dog, but in reality they want a dog that is a watchdog and guards their house, and rather then actively go and bite it deters intruders by looks and barking.

yeah fair enough i bet you do , but in the real world the average backyard gaurd dog wont do shit in the event of a real situation , and i cant have that , its like pulling out a gun but when you go to fire it..ohh no bullets, hence getting yourself into more trouble for pulling out the gun in the first place , no im not saying i need a police style dog ...but a dog that can and will bite if need be..

    cheers big ears

I would highly recommend a Shepherd or Malinois but the best thing is to go out and see whats out there and what type of dogs people have and if you like them or not.

Might bean idea to start learning a bit about dog training and behaviours before you get a puppy. Perhaps join a club of some sort - a sch club would be a good start, and of course attend some sessions with people that already have pp dogs. Have you even owned a dog and trained it in lets say obedience?

hmm funny I thought if you pull that trigger you end up in jail. I must be living in another world.
I was watching a program on animal planet maybe an hour ago.
A woman in a wheel chair had a service dog, an overweight spinger spaniel.
The spaniel nipped someone at a train station when they were yelling at her for some reason. The offender run away and she let the dog off loose. The dog chased the guy and never actually bit the guy.
Cops came she got charged with intend of bodily harm using a deadly weapon.

But each to their own.... Good luck with the dog of course. Hopefully noone pulls the gun out on your dog before it has a chance to bite in that "real" situation.

My dogs ripped pants of people that walked into my yard, they are NOT PP dogs, yet the holes were real ))

I have dobermanns but Ill say - dont get one of them.

They are not hard enough for what you want.. You can try working lines but overall opinion is not a good one of the breed. And I dont know any working line breeders of dobes in Sydney

I recomend a rottie for home protection and PP.
As they are much more suited to a pet home security environment, and are much easier to live with.
A well bred rottie can and will bite if need be.
People say rotties are useless , well that is because they do not want to pay for one, so they go and buy from the wrong places.
As a mali is to much as a pet unless you are actually taking it to work for security, any one tells you any different, they are lying to you. Yes they may look like they come to the table sooner than any other dog, but that is where it starts and ends.
They are that popular that they cannot even sell them, they are giving them away.
And as for a good shepherd well we all know they have had their day.

    regards

    Rob
So I suggest you give myself or Paula or Laurie a call.

I would suggest a GSD or a Rottie for a pet/personal protection dog. Larger size and easily recognizeable breed that people associate with protection dogs will give good deterrant value so it is less likely you will need to actually deploy the dog. Calmer temperament than a Malinois. I think you can find good working line GSD if you know where to look.

Yes but we are all aware of the health issues GSD HAVE TODAY.
Would you want a dog for life or for a year or two?
