    Working Dog Registry

What are your thoughts on this guys..

If you were to setup a registry what code of conduct / rules / guidelines would you have?

This registry is predominantly for the registration of line bred crosses, pures are fine, but they will no doubt already have their own breed registry.. There is nothing out there atm that can protect some of the working lines we have in the country..

Not just for security either - pig dogs, hunting dogs, cattle dogs, sheep dogs - the list can go on..

    Love to hear your thoughts..

    Re: Working Dog Registry

    good stuff

this registry will have to be top notch so the line bred breeders will have a chance at recognition.

Its not going to happen in the next few years but in the next couple of decades i reckon there will be a push to restrict the breeding of cross bred dogs.

The below info was done by a very smart lady a few years ago.. I think if we use this as a base and go from there.

    Recorded details:

    Dogs Name

    Date of Birth

    Parentage

    Breed/Breeds

    Breeder

    Owner

    Microchip/Tattoo/Brand

    Colour/Markings

    Code of ethics
    • Pups are to be bred from animals which are healthy, of good temperament, proven ability and free from known genetic faults
    • Animals are to be properly represented at time of sale
    • Written guarantees for the animals health and working ability are encouraged
    • Wormed and Vaccinated unless new owner is advised otherwise
    • New owners are to be advised on parents’ temperament and appropriate care, training and housing for their new dog.
    • Even though working dogs can make excellent pets in the right circumstances, breeders are discouraged from selling dogs to non working homes.
    • Pups/dogs must only be sold to suitable homes. Fencing, use, yard size, children and other circumstances must be taken into account before sale.
    • Pups and dogs are not to be homed as pets unless their temperament is suitable for such a lifestyle and the new owner is properly advised of their need for exercise, training and stimulation. Dogs not suitable to breed from are also to be desexed before rehoming, or the new owner advised to desex the dog at a more suitable age.
    • Breeders are encouraged to take pups back if they prove unsuitable in their new home, with transportation and expenses at cost to the buyer unless mutually arranged or to assist with rehoming to take pressure off the already struggling animal rescues.

    Re: Working Dog Registry

When we say cross breeds are we discussing F1 cross or further 2nd, 3rd generational crosses? I presume line breeding as in multi generations? Of the same cross and no more out sourcing with other breeds or am I mistaken?

Although I have Pure breed dogs I am interested in the well being of all dogs and think a registry for cross types is a great concept. Do you have a name thought of for such an organisation? Never hurts to think ahead.

    Recorded details:

    Dogs Name

    Date of Birth

    Parentage

    Breed/Breeds

    Breeder

    Owner

    Microchip/Tattoo/Brand

    Colour/Markings

The above is a good start.

Because we are dealing with potential misidentification with cross types being labeled all a "pitbull" type, It would not be a bad Idea to DNA profile the sire/dam and all puppies born live.

Also make it mandatory to Immunise, worm, microchip and screen all puppy purchasers thoroughly. Asking potential buyers why they want the dog, will they breed it?

What about health testing? That can be tricky for crosses, can you identify any stock who suffered hip/elbow issues? Thyroid issues? Eye disorders whatever these are just examples in my breed that crop up.Identifying dogs with a health issue will they be desexed or ??

Lots of Ifs and buts but these are just some things to ponder over....

    Cheers
    Amy

Why limit dogs in an open registry. If the dog has merit it should be entitled to be entered. (only banned dogs should be excluded)

    Re: Working Dog Registry

    Hi Amy..

From what im thinking the registry wont have to be F1,2,3 or any cross for that matter. There are lots of dogs in this country that are linebred and have been line bred for 30 - 40 years. Somewhere along the line there would have been pure dogs used. I do not think it would be traceble now though.

Health testing is hard. Where to start and where to finish.. In hunting dogs, genetic faults will surface faster then a lap dog that sits on the couch. If the dog cannot hunt it is not bred with.

Hip Dysplacia may be a test worth while. Apart from that, only after time and generations may you find health issues.. At that time then i think that particular line of dog should then go through health testing. (joe bloes dog is susceptible to eye disorders so they are then tested)

Also make it mandatory to Immunise, worm, microchip and screen all puppy purchasers thoroughly.
I think that has to be mandatory as well.

I think DNA breed profiling is not accurate enough to proove anything. Having DNA tests to proove parentage is a good idea though.. That then guarantees the pups are from the said parents.

    Keep the ideas coming..
