Why did you choose your chosen breed??

Hi all. Thought id start up this new topic-
Why did you chose your chosen breed(and what is it)??
And if you were to ever have another breed, what would it be and why??

For me my family have owned Dobermann's for a couple of generations now, so its in my blood. i love there natural protective instinct, as well as their complete loyalty, they love a snuggle/cuddle, are utter goof balls and never seem to grow up, acting like pups till the day the pass, they are extremly trainable and will do anything to please their pack leader. i could not imagine my life without a dobie there by my side.(which is where they always seem to be )

Before having Dobermann's my grandparents had GSD's (and right now have a Rotty), so working dogs are all i have ever known. if i was to ever get another breed of dog it would be a dark sable shepherd or a Rotty as i cannot handle the coat of the GSD's. they both have great natures and personalities, and are like bug giant cuddly bears

i appreciate your imput. thanks everyone.
    Cheers, Jess

I have a Kelpie, Kelpie X and GSD. With the Kelpies, I love their energy, enthusiasm, drive, agility as well as their size and sleek looks. They are always on the go and are loads of fun. I have found the GSD very different, and like their steadiness, goofiness and cuddliness, very different to train than the Kelpies. I can get better close work (fronts, heeling position) with my GSD than my Kelpies, while the Kelpies are better at the distance work for agility.

If I get another breed it will be a Malinois of course!

My "chosen" breed is the Siberian Husky. They're just awesome.

My GSD I chose because Jeff said mals would be too hard for me as a first working dog :P

I will probably get a GSD as my next dog I buy for sporting purposes, but I'd like a mal in the future.

    Hi Jess

After a lifetime of training and handling GSDs (my father was a breeder), apart from one Rottweiler which was an excellent dog. I decided to change to a Malinois because unfortunately good working line GSDs are difficult to come by, and with all the health problems associated with GSDs I wanted a breed which was nearest to what they were originally meant to be; had far less health issues, and would generally also live longer than either a GSD or Rottweiler.

All breeds have pros and cons but after researching the Malinois (Working line), and hearing how they performed in a service environment, I decided that this breed offered similar qualities to the old working line GSDs with the additional benefit of extreme drives. Are there disadvantages? I can only say that maybe concentration is an area where you’ve got to put more work in, particularly nose-work (tracking), most things are done at full speed, and unless worked they can easily find something to do which may not be quite what you want!

Will I stay with this breed? Definitely.

Thanks guys. its interesting to see the different reasons for choosing that breed.
its defiantly a Mal place here, i'd love one, but i dont think i could have the patience, just yet, maybe in the future though....

and i thought i'd start thanking people, dont know why, it seems like no one here does, so we may as well start some where.
    Cheers, Jess

Yes agreed..a thank you goes a long way. I guess many just get caught up in daily life and reading posts (me included), it just skips their minds. I am sure everyone is grateful for any advice

Also there is a "Thanks" button at the bottom right hand side of the posts, that will automatically thank anyone you wish to thank.

My dog of choice would have to be the GSD. I also do have a soft spot for the Rotty.

Having said that.. I love dogs in general and find I can be attached to any breed (or mixed breed). All dogs have their own personalities and traits... the world would be a less happier place without them.

Thank God for our beloved canines!

    Cheers

I mustn't have made that post clear (i dont know where my head it this morning)
that's what i meant by thanking people, using the "thanks" button down the bottom.
i thanked everyone this morning but it didn't work, but i just retried it then and it was fine.

i agree 100% the world would be a pretty sad place without dogs in it.
    Cheers, Jess

    Hi everyone

My chosen breed is the unregistered KNPV malinois. The reason I have chosen this breed is that they are selectively bred to be the strongest working dogs regardless of pedigree papers or canine governing bodies ie FCI registration.

In terms of drive, fight and committment to work I dont think you can go past a good malinois, not saying that other breeds dont have these traits I just think the malinois produces these traits more consistanly than many other breeds.

However they are definately not suited to everyone and select lines are purely suited to military/police and special operations, while others are much better suited to sport and general home and personal protection. Within the breed there are so many different traits, characters and phenotypes, something to suit most situations.

The malinois also has alot less health problems compared to many other breed, making them the ideal work/service dog.

These are only some of the reasons why I have chosen the malinois.

    Thanks

    Regards Ben

Re: Why did you choose your chosen breed??

I looked for quite a while before i decided on the American Bulldog. I wanted a low maintenace dog breed with a outgoing but layback nature that could guard. I was after something different, a multi purpose dog that could turn its hand to most things. I wanted a very family friendly dog that can also protect. As well as the traditional working competitions I was interested in weight pulling and other types of endurance comps. My other interest is hunting and if I could get a dog to suite this as well it would be a bonus. The more I looked at the American Bulldog the more I liked what I saw. So as I do with most things I jumped in boots and all and tried to find very good dogs, to start my kennel. I have never regretted choosing the breed, they really are the ultimate all round dual purpose dogs that surprise you every day.

The other two breeds I am very fond of are the South African Boerbal and the Rotti and one day we may even expand into these as well.

    Cheers,

    Steve
