Hi Nathan,
I'm not a trainer but I show my dog by barking beside it and say bark, maybe if you have another dog to show it by saying bark and the one that barks gets the praise.
There would probably be better ways, can't wait to hear what others say.
There is alway to teach it i=the word bark when it does it so it get used to what you want.
Like I said I am no trainer, but have trained dogs all my life.

Hi Nathan,

Build in some frustration, less movement by the decoy during prey until the dog becomes innovative and tries different things like barking to get the decoy moving again. as soon as the the dog barks the decoy switches back into prey and quickly rewards with a bite. Every dog is different but you just need to try different things and see what works for that dog. This is just one way the works for me. There are many other ways to get a dog to bark and hopefully others will share there ideas. Some dogs are very intense during bite work and are much harder to get to bark. I taught my Mal to bark separate from bite work but still through frustration at feeding time. he is a very innovative dog and gets frustrated very quickly. Once I had the bark command at feed time I then added balls and tugs as rewards. Sleeves quickly followed. In saying that he was quite a natural barker during any type of bite development.

Cheers

Chris

Hi cramet the others are wright but like thay say it depends on an individual dog. I have some other sugestions to add to it and you can try them out at you own time and see if they dont work for you.

Some dogs respond better to the frustration and defence if it is done from behind the fence so if you got a cannel or a fance area you can try that work through a fance. Thats how i started my mal bitch, and at the time i put in a comand.

On the other hand while i was in Holland they use to tye their young dogs up and let thm watch the older dogs work and you will be suprised but all the pups where barking at the decoy running past so this is another way to let your dog watch even if it is just one other dog being worked and barking he will soon pick it up.

hope some of this helps

This is how my bitch is learning, she is silent with barks, but recently has begun to vocalise rather loudly and now barks a lot when watching, she is starting to get a good understand from watching others and is finally letting us know!.
