Default Vic Government - DPI Survey - tougher dog laws

Hi All …..

The state Victorian Government has proposed some changes to the dangerous dogs laws which will enable them to seize and destroy dogs simply because of the breed of dog that they are with no due process and further are proposing the ability for a council to be able to enter a persons house and take and destroy their dog when it has done nothing wrong. This is something that I cannot agree with. They are asking for the public to fill in a survey of their opinion. You can find the survey here.

Thanks Jamie.

This is my first response to it.

No, people should have the right to collect the animal within 8 days then the authorities may put to sleep if unclaimed. If the authorities wish to not offer a rehome service then that is at their discretion.

Cheers
Amy

Hmm I really wonder whether this survey will reflect the true comments that have been put forth. I doubt it and I think the Government will use the answers / responses that they wanted to have as the reason to again modify the current legislation we have. This state has to be the most legislated state when it comes to dogs laws. The truth be known is that we all know that BSL does not work. The stats from overseas countries prove that it does not work. Why do we have to try and reinvent the wheel?...............oh that is right the ultimate aim is for us all the have small generic dogs of no particular breed .........I thought I lived in Australia where you still have rights????

Nope (slaps head) I live in Victoria, the over legislated state .................................AKA the Nanna state!

As much as I am not a fan of this proposal, I do believe in this country many dogs are of suspect temperament.

There is no specific breed or cross that should be on a council radar system but if they find a dog displaying aggression meaning they cannot feed it and hose down the runs over at the pounds, then IMO it's their call to PTS. I vote people should be allowed a grace period to collect their dog from a pound within certain amount of days but I do not think a rehoming policy is everything. I may sound controversial here but I don't agree with releasing dogs to the public without any prior information on that dog.

Cheers
Amy

problem is more the blind generalisations ... any dog that does bitework is dangerous. Yeah OK I know a couple of champion border collies that go berko over a sleeve yet are trained to pinpoint precision. ANy pitbull is dangerous ... OK so the pomeranian that I still have scars from is a joke is it?

I agree if the owner cannot manage or rehabilitate the dog, euthanasia is the option. But to pigeon hole dogs, that is not fair. Most of our dogs are better trained and safer then most 'pet' dogs out there today.
