Re: Raw/Braf diet

I feed all natural
My dogs get what Kaiser gets but this is only a part of their diet.
I give them lamb ribs, been mince, eggs, youghurt, whole raw fish, blended veggies (with chicken carcass mince) turkey necks, lab necks, pork bones and some offal.
Plus any left overs we have. (as an example they got prawn heads couple of days ago (about 10 each, plus all the shells)

They also get missing link as a supplement, fish oil capsules, glucosamine and occasional multi vitamine tablets.

Re: Raw/Braf diet

they seem to have pretty much the same diet, i got a meal plan given to from a friend, with pretty much all of the above.
kaiser loves fish oil tablets, its strange, but then he does love sardines. he gets most of what you've mentioned all mixed up together, into one giant lumpy mush.

Re: Raw/Braf diet

I'm a bit like Nathan, i use to mix up a special diet but as my dog numbers grew I changed over to Duck frames and Coprice working dog formula and the occassional meaty bone.

Having said that any dogs I am working/excercising/training hard I put Rapidvite racing greyhound formula inside the duck frame. I have also started using a greyhound electrolite powder inside the frame as well.

The only thing I mix up these days is my own puppy mix which is made up of the following ingredients:

Mix up and freeze in bags with daily portions:

2 Duck carcasses minced up
4 Chicken carcasses minced up
500g Venison minced up
500g Liver minced up
3 cup mixed veggies
3 cup cooked white rice
2 Eggs, shells and all
2 tablespoons Cod liver oil
50g Rapidvite stud formula (Greyhound trace element mix)
Handful Plantain (plant to help control worms & diarrhea, it’s a common garden weed)
2 teaspoons Garlic granules
2 teaspoons Apple Cider Vinegar
5 teaspoons deer velvet powder (K9 Magic)
3 tablespoons of natural Yogurt

You can use extra chicken instead of the duck and also beef instead of Venison

I'm lucky as I have deer on my farm and the ducks I get from a duck farm that kills 12000 (yes thousand!!) ducks a day. The only thing they take off the duck are the breast and legs....some have the legs still on them!!! They are huge in comparison to chicken frames (see photo) and the meat is very oily which seems to give the dogs a very soft coat. The dogs love the duck frames that still have the head/beak still on them!!! They cost me $15 a Wheelie bin or about 15 cents a frame and I fill up my F100 ute with about 1000 duck frames which are frozen at home and keep my 15 dogs going for a few months.

I will put up an article soon on deer velevt and it's advantages for dogs......I have the raw stuff on my farm here and my dogs love it!!

Re: Raw/Braf diet

i never thought of duck frames, thats a really good idea. and for you cheap.
although for us that dont live near a duck farm, they would probably be hard to come by.
i may have to look into ducks instead of chickens, but lennards is so convenient.
Cheers, Jess

Re: Raw/Barf diet

holy jeez I wish I could get that many duck frames That would keep my lot going for quite a while!

chicken carcasses, rice, veges and meat off cuts from the butcher keeps my lot looking good. I love Royal Canin but its a bit much for my pocket at the moment

Re: Raw/Barf diet

Hi Jess,
great question, one I have worked on myself. Though I am lucky here because we have roo shooters that have a shop and most goes for dog food. I used the barf diet and found it to be very expensive so I make my own.
I get roo and chicken minced together because roo is twice the protien of any other meat.
I blend leafy, yellow, orange vegies together, you can use fruit as long as it is all ripe.
What ever is at the markets at the time.
Once a week it will be liver, kidney.
I put flax oil, esata c, missing link. Every second day a teaspoon of apple cidar vinegar.
I also have a garlic in honey brew which I'll give once a week, or on wounds.
I'll give an egg once a week, these days she's been helping herself to the coop, so I'm not sure how many of them she's been having.
I go to a naturopath and have asked many questions. I've added my extras as well.
She gets meat bones of other kindss, lamb, beef.
I brought a blender just for my dog,lol
There are books you can buy that gives you receipes to make up your own barf blends, it makes it so much cheater.
A way I do it, I will blend a batch of vegies and freeze it in the amounts I use in a meal, then pull it out and mix it with the meat, and all the other goodies. Makes life so much easier and I know what my dog is eating. I have also been told carrot juice is a good way to give your dog vit C but I still do the ester C.
Hope this all helps.
Regards Ena
Oh I forgot fish, salmon or sardines at least twice a week added to her meat. thanks

Re: Raw/Barf diet

Hi.........I feed pretty much as has already been written here but can add a couple of things to the above.

Like Eatz.....I mince up my fruit and vegies in massive batches once a month and then freeze in shopping bags….I thaw what I need & mix the pulp thru a mince meal.
For instance I will buy a big 10 kilo bag of horse carrots…..use an equivalent amount of apples from our numerous trees….then add whatever is in season and cheap at the time.
For our breed where colour is important: carrots and pumpkin are invaluable for rich pigment etc.
You can use almost anything……but again over ripe is best & really shouldn’t use onions leeks etc.
Garlic is GREAT for natural flea repellent and funnily enough it works well counteracting bad breath in dogs!

Missing Link is an excellent product & as we already know: it helps our dogs get the trace elements, vitamins, enzymes and all the bits n pieces that are missing even from the best natural diets……(because our dogs are no longer getting to eat the nails, hair and all the grizzly bits of the animals, beetles n’ bugs they used to hunt).
However I have found an equivalent product which is very competitive on price called GREENPET ESSENTIALS obtained from GREENPET in QLD.

http://greenpet.com.au/pet-shop/cart.php

They mail order cheaply and promptly and are great to deal with!
I purchase all my herbs in bulk from Greenpet….for instance you can buy your Ester C powder for $50 per kilo rather than 250 gms for the same price at pet shops or health food shops….(note smaller quantities are also available).
I also feed Flax Seed oil and again this is much cheaper when purchased in bulk by the 5 litre container!
Last of all Greenpet make a powdered natural fruit and vegie mix: VEGIE PLUS…….which can be used in replacement of the fresh pulp if you haven’t the time to mince…….or maybe run out of fresh vegies….or perhaps your new puppy won’t eat fresh…..so you can use the powder until you have had a chance to introduce the fresh slowly!

Last thing I wanted to add is that it’s recommended that every now and again you feed your dog a whole fresh rabbit.…and I mean whole….fur, head, guts n’ all.
(Now PLEASE I certainly don’t advocate the purchasing from a pet shop…….perish the thought…but if you can find a hunter who shoots privately for a farmer etc.….you can ask that he keeps you all the good healthy looking rabbits!)
It is great mentally and physically for your dog….they have to use near every tooth in their head…ie to rip n’ tear…then grind and chew….so this satisfies them in every way as well as doing them good heath wise…….because it goes thru their system completely cleaning the gut……a lot like putting a bottle brush thru their intestines!
Good stuff!

A good friend of mine who is German but living in the States: actually feeds all his Rotts a deer head each in the hunting months and that’s all they get for the week…..so 2-3 days of gorging…….with a proper fast to follow!
Very close to how they would have eaten if hunting for themselves!
Imagine the smell though!

We have fed our dogs deer legs….which work in much the same way as the whole rabbits….but again you need to find yourself a friendly hunter!

Last of all…….added to the various Barf Diets as already mentioned in the posts above…….I also add Kelp powder, Yeast powder, Vitamin E & Fish Oil caps….Cod Liver Oil….and for the boys they get a Zinc tablet once per week.
Re the girls………I make up a “Mummy Herb Mix” but that’s a whole different story!
