Would you welcome a breed warden to decide what dogs are to be used in breeding programs?
With the current issues about dangerous dogs I keep coming back to what is needed to help clean up the dog industry.
Considering that the majority of dogs being bred are living in homes with small children - I personally think we as breeders need to take a less personal look at the dogs being used for breeding and be honest about the quality of our dogs.
Are we doing enough health testing or should there be more - if so what would you like to see brought in?
Why do some breeders need to breed so many litters per year - what is considered too many?
Why use the same dog over several of your own bitches or several repeat matings?
Should there be minimal land size requirement for breeding and should only breeders who can afford to set up commercial breeding kennels on acreage (min 5 acres) be allowed to breed dogs or should there be minimal requirement for kennel set ups for breeding purpose in all breeders yards regardless of the size of the land?
Should a bitch be limited to the amount of litters she can have and at what age she can have her first and last litter? Breed related.
Should a dog be limited to the amount of litters he can sire in a 12 months period and at what age should he be considered mature /good enough before being used at stud and for how long? Breed related.
Since we are only human - we may not look properly at the big picture when deciding if our dogs are sound enough in mind and body - what one person considers breed worth another may not.
Is a breed warden the answer?
If we were to put so many extra restrictions on breeders the next step would be to put extra requirements on ALL dog owners - including housing of any dog that has been considered a risk to the general public. Those dogs who are MUST be housed accordingly or owners will be fined.
What training would be considered minimal?
Would the physical / mental ability of the owner affect the type of dog that can own - if so who could enforce it?
Would breed wardens be the answer to breeders and domestic dog owners?
