    Re: Working Dog Survey

I put an offer out to one of Nick Branson's colleagues in September who was at the K9-09 conference up here in Ipswich for him to come out and have a look at my dog's and my clients dog's working on Ecollars. I also offered to show my dog's to anyone else who was interested from the Federal Animal Welfare Body who were ultimately responsible for this Survey. Although he seemed very interested and keen to find out my opinion on the subject the offer is yet to be taken up.

The thing that worries me about all of this is that Nick Branson is deriving his own conclusions from the data that he has received and assumes that every single person who said they use ecollars must be abusing them and is less educated in training dog's. It is very unfortunate that he has put his own personal opinion out there so publicly and that he believes that the results of this survey in which I personally don't know anybody who actually filled it out are so conclusive. It is obviously to much to expect that these researches would actually leave the comfort of their office and have a look at the practical application of the tool in the "Real World".

every trainer that i know who uses e-collars have tried it out on themselves before they use it on their dogs.

I would be very surprised if any one from the RSPCA has done same before they make any comments on the subject. Let alone learn some thing about the different techniques and training methods using any equipment.

    Re: Working Dog Survey

Everyday at least twice a day I demonstrate the intensity levels from lowest through to the highest on myself to new or potential clients and anyone else who is interested. Somedays I will do this upto 8 times.

The key to changing anyones perception is education but unfortunately people will still let their emotions rule. When you can show a happy dog working on a collar most people will open their minds to what they are seeing and the pre-conceived ideas that collars are purely negative are significantly diminished. Only problem is people like Nick Branson (amazingly because of his role regarding the study) have a significant amount of power when it comes to governments making decisions on the use of tools such as the ecollar

    Hi Chris and Michael

Like I said almost every one i know that has got an e-collar and uses it on their dog is a very responsible person.

furthermore I don't believe that any one who has spend a substantial amount of money and invested thousands of hours in to their animal would set out to hurt it.

Only fulls that don't have a clue can make such comments.

Like I said in my previous post and both of you just prove it, we try the equipment on ourselves so that we know how it will effect our dogs before we use anything on them.

And to add to all of that I most people that do use the e-collars use them at the lowest levels on their dogs which is nothing more then a tickle. I have not seen or heard of any one using it on the highest level, in fact i don't know any one who has even gone up past level three.

I just thought i have my say on the subject, but feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

Perhaps they should have somehow tried to correlate which people used e-collars with what type of dogs people worked with. I think they may have been suprised how many people who had trained dogs to a high working or competition level (and who therefore presumably have a decent knowledge of dog training) used the e-collar. It's not just uneducated hicks that don't know any better.

I've seen the e-collar used up very high for stock proofing and game proofing dogs. Not pretty, but it worked. I've also seen it used down very low as negative reinforcement for obedience, and would have no hesitation with anyone using an e-collar like that. It simply doesn't hurt or scare the dog when it's used that low.

It's a pity there is such misinformation being spread about the e-collar, but I wonder if the people behind the smear campaign genuinely believe that there is only one way that the collar is used (up high to "shock" the dog)?
