How honest should a breeder be?

Should a breeder use honest language that the layman potential purchaser can understand in the advertising of their dogs, or should they loosely veil the real aims of their breeding in secrecy for the sake of an uninformed dog owning public that refuses to acknowledge the importance of, or even the nature of, the genetic traits that further the greater ideals of the breed they are committed to?

Of course they should. The only reason to loosely veil the aims of their breeding as you put it is if they care more about the coin than where the dogs go.The uninformed public can stay in the dark at the end of the day they wont be getting one will they.I didnt see anything wrong with the add in question even if I may not have worded it exactly the same I try to put the idiots off when I do advertise.Problem is the classifieds police read something else into it as if you are encouraging the neanderthal mentality of the overly aggressive dog.Why care what they think. Its about what you think and what you do and who you sell to that counts.Sell to the right people and they are a walking advertisement for your dogs and sell to the wrong people and well.....

    Hmm..

Firstly when advertising anything, only the seller opinion will matter to the individual puppy buyer. It is the Integrity of the seller that matters IMO. I believe anybody selling should advertise positively what they wish to. Clearly outlining to the best of their ability what they believe they are producing.

They are the owners, handlers, breeders etc, it is individual. People using terminology they themselves do not understand serves the dog community no benefit either, anyone can read a book, what about non english speaking people(or english speaking) who work dogs and understand canine body language but do not read the latest training articles etc they only learn from "reading the dogs"....

It would be a very long advertisement indeed, to fit the cornerstones of canine psychology into an ad, so perhaps a quick explanation on character traits expected in puppies is enough and for all serious Inquiries.... the ph no.

Genuine people who are genuine about dogs are easily detected from the BS artists who call up.....

Looking at it from both perspectives this is the best i can come up with at almost midnight!

Edited to ad, Character traits easily understood (generally) confident, social, strong etc...

I think if you are breeding for a particular thing with a particular audience in mind, that it helps to use the terms that your audience will understand.

Eg. In working Kelpies, they will say how mcuh 'eye' the parents have, whether they are expecting the pups to be able to work sheep and cattle or be better at one or the other, be good at yard/utility/paddock work, how much bark they have etc. These are the things that sheepworking people are interested in.

So yes I think if your audience is sport/security/military that using the terms these people are looking for is important when advertising your puppies - their drives, whether they are likely to be civil, nerves, etc.

Ladies, I personally think your posts are excellent, and you sum up the situation well.
