What hound breeds are used with frequency in Austrailia?

Just curious, but what hound breeds are in use and with what frequency in Austrailia? Bloodhounds, Black and Tans, Walkers, Redbones, Plotts, etc.? Just wondering?

Are you asking about a particular job that they do or in all working fields?

Beagles are very popular for scent detection and are used in airports among other locations. Not sure about other breeds or other fields such as tracking/trailing/SAR or hunting.

Nothing in particular, I was just curious. Obviously, hounds don't quite cut the mustard when it comes to bitework, but I was wondering from a tracking point of view what was being used.

Bloodhounds have been used successfully for S&R in the past and here in Australia by private organisations. I believe there is a S&R team currently running Bloodhounds but others on this forum would be able to tell you more about that. To my knowledge unfortunately our Police departments currently are not embracing these wonderful K9's. IMO there is no better sight in the working dog world than a Bloodhound Trailing, they are simply amazing!

I have been out of this area for a while now but a big problem was always finding suitable candidates. Gene pool for working lines is very small. Trials were also with Bluetick Coonhounds.

    Cheers

Scott, there is not a lot of use of hounds in Aus.
We only have a couple of Bloodhound workers, and very few working breeders.
They bought in some Blueticks, but for showing mostly.
The , Black and Tans, Walkers, Redbones, Plotts, etc do not exist here. A couple of hog hunters brought in Catahoulas and are promoting them, but most Australian hog hunters use dual purpose find and catch dogs so there is not a big demand for bay dogs.
Welcome to the board by the way Tony

Pity the real use of these dogs have not been discovered in Australia. A friend of mine recently moved to Kentucky, USA. He works in a museum where the security personnel there take their job seriously. The museum security has its own dog squad!!! - Do not know might be attached to a university.

Anyway they utilise bloodhounds quite a bit, one of the main applications is finding owners of lost property. Last week one of the handlers found a wallet in the car park. Gave the hound the command to search and picked up the odour from the wallet went inside the museum where there are crowds of people, so the track would have been covered and walked on by 100's of people, found the gentleman and his family at the other end of the complex.
If you can imagine a museum people zigzag the floor to look at exhibits - a lot of turns.
    All in a days work.
