Why do i really love my dog?

If we don't love em, we just shouldn't own em.

    I love my boy.

He is a real headache at times, but in the moments where we really connect on the deepest levels, we actually get each other.

It's an amazing gift to have that type of bond with a non-human. He makes me grateful on a daily basis for the hard work that I have put in over the last 18 months to bond with him and earn his trust and respect.

He is asleep 1.5m away from me right now, snoring his head off in my crappy little house on his bed, looking up every now and again when he checks on my activity, and I just flick him a kind word and tell him how much I love him, and that seems to suit the big fella just fine.

He doesn't love me...a dog can't love a person, not by definition anyway. BUT we do have a bond that allows him to trust in my good intentions and judgement, and being a very loyal guy, his is a trust I consider sacred.

Dogs cannot understand our higher reasons for denying them things, reprimanding them, or encouraging them to do things that they cannot see inherent value in. That they comply with us, and follow the leadership we offer to them, is a true priveledge, and a reaffirmation that our commitment to them is worthwhile in a tangible way.

They aren't always easy, they often send us near broke, and they may even give us 'brain damage' from time to time. If you are analysing your relationship on a sufficient level then you most likely spend a truckload of time trying to appreciate the depth of your interactions with them, and you are probably deserving of being his keeper.

They are dogs, and we should love, enjoy, and appreciate them. Even if the best we can hope for is our dog to bond heavily and deeply with us, to understand us to a high level and adjust to our inadequacies as handlers/trainers, that in and of itself is a lofty goal to achieve.

I would urge all of us who read this post to post a heartfelt reply about what our dogs really mean to us, and then take 5 minutes out of our busy day to go outside and show our dog/s just how deeply and profoundly they affect our lives in a positive fashion by returning the favour.

Go play tug, 2 ball, feed some treats, or just give the little bastard some rough pats and talk to them nicely.

We don't always deserve them, but for just a few minutes take some time to let the FEEL how much we understand that we appreciate them.

Call me anthropomorphic, call me a softy, call me a weirdo.

If we don't love em, we just shouldn't own em.

    Period.

    Great post Brad.

Thanks so much for sharing that with all of us!

My boy Cisco, no.1 he is my friend, I have loved each moment positive and negative for the past three years, on a good day he has blown me away with his willingness and focus to not only learn but to carry out happily what is required of him. He sits under the dinner table and eats kids fallen scraps and just looks like he is in pure heaven. He accompanies me to the bathroom and just lays there while i talk rubbish to him, and although he is hot from the steam, he just watches on calmly,happily..

When he is a stubborn shit, he is showing pure noble character, he is intelligent and at times needs to be reinforced, yes you are a prince but all princes must perform their rightful roles lol, so give and take he has come to understand and accept.

If his elbow serves him well and he titles wonderful and if not he will retire still with me as my best friend.

This breed in general has changed and taught me so much about myself also, i obtained my first when i was 17, 1997.

Anthropomorphic yes, but sometimes it is nice to be real about how we feel for our four legged buddies. They are dogs and not robots, capable of good and bad, they are our friends.

    Cheers
    Amy
